Hello TEXLONEWOLF, Welcome to the forum. A good starter SSB would be either the President McKinley like you mentioned or a Uniden 980 SSB, both are good to go frequency wise right out of the box. This K7MEM website http://www.k7mem.com/Ant_Yagi_HF.html offers a YAGI calculator so you can build your own beam, unless you prefer Quads.

No need to obscure that link. I do believe you can get Maco antennas now made by Charles Electronics.

I believe that radio has a dual clarifier, the outside knob does both transmit and receive, the inside knob does receive only. Check to make sure the inside knob isn't sticking and turning with the outside knob (DeoxIt). When you go to adjust the frequency, turn the clarifiers both to 12 o'clock. 3'...

I would actually start with a much simpler antenna, a 1/2 wave dipole. They are easy to make out of a "dollar store" 9ft extention cord. This would get you "on the air" in an hour or less.

If your equipment is all sitting on the same bench or desk you might want to get some "non slip drawer liner" to place under it, that will help stop the vibration of the transformer being picked up by the microphone. It comes in a roll and you can cut it to size needed.

The new Astatic mic's seem not to have the punch of the older models but would be fine if your radio just needs a little boost in modulation, just one thing is it will increase the noise around you as well. If you could find an older model that would be excellent.

With having the metal half roof I'd go with a Sirio Performer or Turbo 5000 if you can stand the noise of the whip banging lower obstacles. They use a SO239 mount which to me is a little stronger than a NMO mount. Or use a 3/8 24 roof mount and then you can go with any antenna you want.
