Midland 78-976?

saw an add on craigslist a guy is wanting to trade a Midland 78-976 40 channel upper and lower side band. radio has no mic. unknown working condition. i don't know what its worth. judging by the crappy picture it looks like a base station. i can't find any information on the interweb. anyone here know? whats it worth? i wouldn't expect much from the description, or lack thereof. is it a nice radio?

Wow, that looks exactly like the old 13-976 Midland I owned...my first CB ever! Of course mine was a 23 channel sideband. If I didn't know any better I'd say that's what that is. And if it's a 40 channel version it's totally different inside I'd expect. But it had great audio and I tied the clarifier. And yes, it was a base radio. If I recall, about twice the size of a Cobra 148 or so. Wasn't huge though and could probably be used for mobile, as it had 12vdc connections. But the case is plastic so I'm not sure how well it'd do in hot cars and stuff.

As far as worth, to someone like me who has had one similar, it'd guess around $30-$80? Just depends on if it works, and whether or not it's all beat up.

Not much help I know, but I don't think they were a popular model.

the guy was wanting to trade or barter. i sent the guy an email asking how much cash he wanted for the radio, if he had any more pictures, the condition of the radio and i got no response. its just as well, i ended up spending a butt load of money on truck repairs over the weekend. and so continues my quest for a base station with sideband. it just ain't gunna happen at the moment.

That's a bummers. Both the truck repairs and the fact he never got back to ya'. Probably thinks he can get more out of them or something doing a barter/trade. Oh well...nice find anyway.

I see the post is old at this point but I have one. FYI. Yep mine works. It also has a power supply or plugs into 120V AC.

The numbers are correct.

Midland 78-976 is a 40 Ch AM/SSB made by Cybernet in the late 1970's - They didn't make many of them.

They are an 058AOX circuit board from memory.

I believe the 78-*** designation was to show the radios are 40 channel made after the channel increase in 1977. Some pre 1977 models came with a manufacturers slip to have them revamped to 40 channels, those are extremely rare. Midland had a few excellent base radios that are very rare, both AM and SSB models.

Greg's spot on with the model designation numbers.

The 78 **Censored** & 79 **Censored** models were all PLL sets , The vast majority were 40 ch's - there were a couple of very early ones with 23 ch's (some in 79 892's) and a few 18 channel ones over here in Australia - But they were all PLL sets - and the vast majority were 02a PLL.

You have to be careful when looking at the very early ones like 79 - 892 as the 13 - 892 looked very similar but was a Crystal Locked set , I've accidentally bought them before not realising at the time they weren't the PLL versions
