just got this cobra 86xlr radio today anyone know any mods to do to it. working great just like to pick it up a little.

i have the same radio.
in storage. its a good base radio. useless to me no ssb

nope not much for mods. i believe the radio was the first 40 channel radio.

They are a good little base radio, has a little more rejection than most cobra models that came out afterward, only mod would be the modulation adjustment and adding a power mic helped them out a lot. I think with a needed recapping they make an excellent starter base radio.

this radio can take some extra channels if you wanted to do that. never have found a variable for it. I looked at the schematic and never did see a place you could really put variable on it. never have seen the insides of this radio.

I was doing some more searching and it looks like the 32xlr is the mobile version of the 86xlr. look and see if this is the same as the board in your radio. if so it is the service manual you can use. just like a cobra 148 is the same board as the 2000gtl.
