Talk back on Cobra 29LTD Classic

#389508

Post by JetSetter »

Hey all, I have a Cobra 29LTD Classic SN:607316425 (Made in China) and have been trying to figure out why i have no sound. I do hear the speaker pop when i turn power on and off. So i know that works. Plus when i key the mic and speak, i can hear myself from the speaker. So i'm guessing it's in talk back mode. But there is NO talk back switch or knob. So how do i get out of this mode?

Unless someone added talk back, that radio does not have " talk-back" ...and even if it did, that's not how talk-back works...you should still be able to hear static and people talking even with talk-back turned on.

Well i guess i have a problem then, because i don't hear people or static. Needle does move when i key the mic. Would a bad swr keep me from hearing anything. Or is that mostly effect the tx side.

Talkback on the 29 ltd is done by connecting the external speaker to the pa via a resistor or potentiometer so start looking there. This should not affect your transmit except if its not done correctly your radio might squeal on transmit {feedback)

Check your squelch knob and make sure it's turned all the way to the left....

Think i found the problem. For some reason the RF Gain has to be turned all the way up. Which makes me want to check the swr. And the knobs them self seem sticky, or maybe dirty is more the word. All except the Delta tune knob, that i replaced with new. So i'll clean the knobs and see what happens. Just hope i don't have to change them all.

the RF gain has to be turned to the right as far as it goes to receive as the radio was intended. the rf gain is mainly used to cut out close people talking or to help cut out some of the static noise. you said for some reason it has to be turned to the right as far as it goes. that tells me the RF gain is working as it should. there is not a problem with it.
you never did say what your swr is. if the coax is shorted it will kill your RX also.
when the radio is workin g right and you can hear people talking you can reach up and grab a hold of the antenna and kill your signal some.

Thanks, that's good to know about the RF gain. On my DX959 i keep it right in the middle. If i remember the swr was around 1.5 When i get my on/off switch installed i'll give you a update. Changing the RF gain switch also. It needs it

That was a great bunch of information in that last topic.
Sure a bunch of good stuff to know.

One of thre biggest things I see when getting any used radio is to a complete, nuts and bolts cleaning of the rig.
the dirts and spills and dust and cooties hurts any of dem older rigs to no end.

73 ya'll. Have a great weekend and prayers you can find some good bargins in the yard sales and auctions.

Mike

UPDATE

Ok guys, so I re-placed the volume control, RF gain and the Delta tune control. everything seems to be working fine. Now when i adjust the volume, there's no clicks or static. Now just have to clean up my desk a bit.
