#373793

Post by darinmarx »

I just received a GE 558 Superbase and it has a Bad Mic. I was looking for some help locating a good replacement for it. Does anybody repair the old stand up Mics? Thanks for any help, I am very new to this and would love to get this up and running.

Hello darinmarx,
Welcome to the forum. If I remember the GE SuperBase came with a handheld microphone so the desk mic was an add on. Now what we need to know is what mic is it. If it is not repairable you could always get an aftermarket microphone wired to the radio. Check out some of the sponsor sites for a mic.
As a new member to the forum could you post a intro in the "Welcome to the Forum" topic, http://www.cbradiotalk.com/viewforum.php?f=89 , so others can say "hi", thanks.

Thanks for the info Greg. The mic is a Astatic D-104. It may be repairable but I have limited contacts for this type of work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Most times it's dirty contacts in the grip bar or a broken wire solder joint. They aren't that hard to take apart as long as your careful. If you do, real fine emery cloth on the contacts, touch up the solder joints and spray them with contact cleaner (DeOxIt). Could also be a broken wire in the plug, I see that a lot too.

I use 1600 grit wet or dry sandpaper, and give the contacts a shot of de-oxit. We are ready to go.

Being a watch repairman working on those large components in the mic should be a piece of cake. My BIL (now deceased) was a watch repairman too, his handle was "Seiko1" and the funny thing was he used a GE SuperBase in his shack, what a coincidence.

Just cleaned the contacts of my D-104. I used 1600 grit wet or dry sandpaper to clean my contacts, and deoxit to give them a very light bath. Used paper to dry between the contacts. And reassembled the mic.

No scratchiness and irregular audio upon keying....perfect!
