Using Wilson 1000 on a Hood/Fender Mount ???
Currently using a Wilson 1000 Mag mount on my Dodge Ram. Im thinking of using the same antenna with hood/fender mount. Can i some how unscrew the coil/wip from the magnet portion and use in on a hood mount? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

If you unscrew the load from the mount you will see it looks just like a PL259 connector, basically it is so any SO239 mount can be used. I only problem would be sealing the base of the load from weather/moisture.

Just my opinion but i think the wilson 1000 works best on a mag or through roof mount. problem on a fender mount might be you cant open your hood without running into the coil. have you thought about a firestik fender mount with a 4 ft firestik? i run a fender mount with just a 3ft firestik on my 2006 mercury milan and im really impressed on how well it performs. i used to run a wilson 1000 on the roof, it did well and im sure got out farther. however it slowly died thanks to corrosion in the coil. firestiks are more weather proof. good luck

I agree with lemmychatter except I would chose something other than a FireStik. I would install a 3/8'' 24 stud mount and you have a realm of antennas to chose from in any number of lengths. In the position you want to install it in a good center loaded antenna would be my choice, something like a Hustler HQ27.

A base loaded antenna like the Wilson 1000 you should be able to get SWR down below 1.5:1, mounting it on the fender is no different than a trunk mount.

you could use silicone between bottom of ant. and surface,,, only has to be enough to make a seal about 1/8" wide and a couple hairs thick.(if your on a flat surface) thats what i did, put a wilson 1000 on my pickup roof.

I ended up ordering a Firestik hood mount and Wilson fiberglass Silver load 5ft antenna. Hoping I won't have any issues with SWR.

That is a very good choice of antenna, it will put most above the roof line. If the mount uses the FireStik "FireRing" coax, you have to keep an eye on the ring, they have a tendency to mash and break causing a short.
