Re: no antenna
Just keying the radio for a few seconds, probably nothing is going to happen...But if you were to start talking then you run the risk of frying the finals.
Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.

Re: no antenna
Yes a couple quick keys shouldn't do hurt, constantly doing it though "will" in the long run, it would be something not to make a practice of. Depends on the radio too, old radios (23 channel) seem to take abuse more than the newer ones, I remember a post where the member had a old parts radio and keyed it up with no load, took over 15 minutes to pop the final.

Re: no antenna
thanks one and all. always heard it would fry the finals. be getting long in the tooth I am and dumb me keyed the mic a couple times me forgetting I took the antenna off the night before. swr went outta sight and I said "what the CENSORED" then unkeyed and keyed again and it did the same. had me puzzled until ignorant me remembered I didn't have the antenna. put antenna back on and the radio seems to work fine, swr back to the original 1.4 on the channels. hopefully it is fine.

Re: no antenna
if just a couple of quick key ups you should be fine. as long as it is working after the antenna was hooked back up you are fine.

To add to this old transistors ect (2sc1969) will take more open load operation than the newer mosfets (ERF2030).
