For SSB use I go to my Magnum 257HP, the best I ever run so far on SSB and it screams on AM too thanks to the stock powered mic and factory Top Gun compression kit.

Agreed the best SSB radio for a beginner, pretty much a good radio right out of the box.

HR2510 with a Texas Star 500....SKIP?? Yup, and a Turner SSK.

Current production??? That'll take some thought....I'll lay my bets on mudder's RCI2970.

OK I'll throw my 2 cents worth in. The best mobile for sideband with out a doubt is one that begins with IC FT TS. If ya want the best don't play around with tinkertoys. Go straight for a real mobile hf rig. No question, no doubt, leave the kiddie toys. My opinion and 5 bucks will get you a cup of coffee in most American restaurants. And you can agree with me or you can be wrong. 73's

Now, this will fly in the face of everything that's been said here but ... in '76 or '77 Sears was selling the Roadtalker radios and I bought their high end, 40 channel SSB unit (they didn't have or at least stress model numbers back then, everything was simply Roadtalker). It was the first 40 channel radio I'd ever seen and it didn't even have a digital channel display, just the big round clickety-clicker in the middle with 40 of them instead of 23. My Father-in-law bought one at the same time. He had dual 3' fiberglass whips on his truck and I had a single, mounted center on my VW bug just below the rear window. Those radios acted like they had 20+ watts on am and 60+ on sideband. Made my Midland and his Royce look like junk. From that little VW I could skip sideband all over the country. I talked to California, Florida, Mexico, Alaska ... easily, and everyone I talked to thought I was on a base station with a linear and a big tower antenna. My Dad-in-law had the same experience. We could talk to each other like were on cell phones anywhere, any time. We regularly talked from Salt Lake to Park City. Not so impressive so far as miles go but when you consider the Wasatch mountain range, with 11,000' peaks was between us, it's impressive, even today. So far as performance went, those little things really got out!
