Ok, help me make a choice

Post by Trapper444 » Monday, 06 November 2017, 14:49 PM

Wanting to talk w a little power on AM cb and SSB
Mobile, 5' Firestick in JEEP
I am going back and forth between these two radios.
President McKinlley and the Ranger RCI 2950CD
I would like to run the KL200P with either one.
The extra $100 for the Ranger isn't gonna break me.
Additional thoughts are I'm really looking to use the SSB and want a good clarifier which the McKinly seems to be about the best in its class. The Rangers also have a good rep for this if I understand correctly.
I Will not use the 10-12 meter as of yet but but would love to get lic in th future and explore that end of it.
I do like the knobs layout, of the ranger more than the modern style set up of the President. That's just me being old school.
Any INPUT APPRECIATED !
Also, if I should be looking at another radio for my needs, let me know that too.
Thanks!

The Ranger RCI 2950DX is too much radio for a KL200P Amp...You'll cook it soon as you key-up! lol

Personally, I'm not a big fan of any of the RM italy Amp's, just not enough "Bang for the Buck". They are small tho, guess if space is a problem they might be ok...Another thing to pay attention to, is the power rating of your antenna if your planning on adding a Amp... I think the Firestick 5' is rated at 500w, and the Firestick II 5' is rated at 1000w's...the shorter Firesticks have a lower power rating.

Check out the Anytone AT-6666, smaller than the McKinley and comparable to the 2950, has about a 50w output on SSB a little less on AM. As for the amp I would not get the 200, just not the greatest amp, need to save up and get something that will take more input wattage. I personally am not a FireStik fan but get it up as high on the vehicle as possible and it should do the job for you.

Thank you Greg. I will check that radio out. Gotta be pretty small to be smaller than the McKinley.
Yeah, because of the ground problem with jeeps, (All fiberglass top) a lot of us run the fire sticks off the rear tire carrier on a special bracket. The other option is to go through a fender so it's easier in the back.
I run a ground cable from inside the rear door to the chassis inside.

The McKinley has variable power, so you can easily match it to that RM Italy amp. I ran a McKinley and K203 for a few months and have no complaints about it. I was using it as a base, and got great reports from the locals and some skip contacts.

I have a 15' JK so I know the mounting problems. When the wife lets me I plan to use an A pillar light mount on the drivers side to mount the antenna. The radio is small enough to mount on the dash center using a homemade saddle inside that cup.

Hey that A pillar mount is a great idea. Didn't think of that.
Did you go to any JEEP events this year? We did Bantam in PA
8 Hour ride but it was a blast. Great time.
What color?

Hey there Trapper,

I'm also using the McKinley as a base radio with the D-104 M6b and the
RM KL 203-P.
This past week I had set-up a Tram 1499 antenna on a tri-pod outside the dining room
of my dwelling in the Pocono mountains of PA.
Figured it was up about 16' AGL.

Contacted Ocala, FL., Daytona, FL, Asheville, NC, Knoxville, TN, and 541 Arizona
all on 11/2/2017.

I'm sure it will work great in your Jeep.

73,

Mike

Thanks for all the advice guys. All good stuff. In the end I ordered the McKinley. After all the research I don't think I could go wrong with that unit in the Mobil. Lots of in depth reviews on it.

blueOx2, did you buy the mic wired for the President or do it yourself?

It asks during the order process online and you have several options as to where you're u were referred from. I picked CBRT FURUM both times. Definitely believe in supporting forum sponsors if they have I am looking for.
