Is the magnum s9 worth it

Post by hilltop 439 » Friday, 26 November 2010, 17:18 PM

I have been looking at the magnum s9 for quite some time but have not dared to buy one . I talked to a couple of local truck drivers in the area who own them . One of them has an older model with 1969 finals he said he loves it . The other guy has a newer model and has had nothing but trouble with it .The led lights keep burning out sideband is terrible and the switches and knob are loose and flimsy. My question is are these high priced radios worth the money or are they just a cheesy built money pit. If anyone on the forum has one i would love to hear your comments.THANKs

I have the older version with the 1969 finals and I love it. I bought it new about 4 years ago to use as a base. It ended up in being a mobile for over 3 years and now I'm using it for a base again. I have never had a problem out of it. I do agree that the channel selector feels flimsy but it is just a different type of knob than most radios have. It works very well with a 4 pill competition amp. I don't know anything about the newer models though.

I have some friends with them. I think the big benefit is that they have killer audio without taking them to a tech.

If you know a good tech, you could setup a decent rig with some other radios and save some money.

I was interested in the magnum s series because they are known for loud am audio. The six digit frec counter and the turbo echo are two more things i liked about these radios . As far as the top gun modulator goes i have one in a galaxy 959 and not impressed with the audio is the s9 any better in that aspect. It seems that they would be because they come from the factory that way.

I have a blue-led, 1969 final, S9 (only have the mic) for $175 shipped. It's in decent shape.

Not being negative but ( you knew that was coming), these are pricey for what you get. Kinda like a striker. Traded for one and got rid of it quick. My rci-3900 was just as loud.

Good am, poor SSB, and not really hi ouput for the money.. Newer models have a lot of issues, use google.

I have the 80 watt version(S-980) and It is a very loud clean and clear AM radio but thats a far as the good goes. It absolutly sucks on SSB and I've had trouble with the echo and the segments for the freq counter. About a month ago it blew something inside and will now only swing 20 watts and won't deadkey nothing. My opinion they suck and I won't buy another magnum/ RF limited product. Thats my opinion and doesn't make all of them bad.

I wonder if the ssb quality has went down on the newer magnum radios. I have an early S9 with the 1969 finals and am happy with the ssb performance.

A radio is only as good as it can be if the truly qualified tech has done the work.S-9's rock on AM and sideband and are as stable as they come. But I will say that mine are the older ones as 543 has stated.I own 2.One in each of my Petes and both go into a 8 pill. Each have diferent drivers.Nothing but compliments.Get a radio thats all puched out and overmodulated,Its never going to sound good on ssb.Needs to be tuned on a scope with a nice waveform for a quality reproduction of your voice.Anything else is crap.

Just my 2-cents.

Nice post in here
Last month I was looking for a good radio on AM and SSB. there was couple of those that i like :
Magnum S9, Magnum S980, Galaxy DX98VHP, Ranger SS158EDX, RCI-2970 N4 . Choose #4 - don't know why , just because. have all i want , after mod's mic gain is at 11o'clock and is screaming ... didn't check it with meters yet but someday I'll do it ...
so i spend much less than for Magnum S9 , i get what i want +extra Wilson1000 magnet mount antenna :)
I'm glad i did't buy S9 :)

Well i guess that answers my question. All in all they are not worth the $350 dollars they sure look COOL though. All the reviews i have read from different Magnum owners all say the same thing the older version are twice the radio. It's to late anyway for now i purchased a Galaxy 98 VHP . It is a good radio but not without faults and not worth $450 dollars at all. I had issues with bad solder joints and distorted audio out of the box. After some tinkering and fine tuning it's been a solid radio with tons of power and blasting loud audio the locals hate it !!!!!!!!!
So it seems that every brand make and model all have a problem with quallity control these days. Why can't they make radios like my old Cobra 139XLR or Midland 76-300 they have been talking for years and years without so must as a burned out meter light .

What the difference in a cobra 29 ltd with 100% audio and a Magnum with 100% audio
A gun in the hand is better than a cop on the phone

Time flies doesn't it? I don't use the magnum exclusively anymore but it still works fine. It sits on the desk under my 148 in case I need more channels, SSB or FM. I'm not as big of an export fan as I was in 2010 but I've kept the old S9 and a 95t that's out on my bench.
