Galaxy 55hp

Post by pancake » Monday, 20 June 2011, 20:12 PM

Galaxy 55hp

Whats in the box? Radio, bracket and hardware, stock mike, fused power cord
Mods? Peak and tune, freq conversion, Tunner Road King 56 mike
Anntenia? Willson 1000

I would rate this radio as a 4, nothing spectaculer common features, 5 dig freq counter with a clarifier. Not realy sure what the clarifier is for because it is a AM/FM with no side band, but like my Galaxy98vhp i have noticed freq drift during extream cold and high heat wich then it comes in handy till it eather warms or cools , it is loud over the air and cristel clear, I think its great for a daily driver wether it is a "Big Truck" or a little truck it does need room to "breath" because of a heat sink on the back. I feel it is a great radio for some one getting into "10 Meter" radios simple and easy to operate supper bright blue led's that are dimmable wich is a must at nite. Big power meter thats not crowded with multaple scale, Radio dead keys at 20 and peaks around 75-90
I do wish that it had echo, or at least talkback, and strongly suggest a mike up grade ( always), other wise a tuff sturdy radio, it survived a intence roll over back in the winter and still working fine

90 watts out of a 55 HP? They do that much? I must be stuck back in the days when they made the 55V. Is this a newer version that has pills or mosfets in it?

I was gonna say the same thing  I have a 55HP , dual mosfet , and it peaks at about 50. Which I believe is the norm.

wow, i need to get up to speed on this stuff, i've been stuck on the tube type equipment for the past 1 1/2 years and can't believe what I've missed! I gave up on Mosfets and pills when I had trouble with a brand new Connex saturn base, and my friends Galaxy 98VHP. Had no luck with them.

My readings are done with a Radio Shack SWR/Power meter with a 20w/200w/2000w range it has a 2 scale meter 20 watt and 2000 watt , it pegs out the 20 watt scale and goes 1/3 the way when on 200 range since there are only the two scales on the meter 20 watt and 2000 watt and going on the reputable dealer i purchased it from, hence the 75-90 and yes it does have mosfets, eather 50-75-90 i think its a great radio.

Liberal meter. I use a Radio Shack meter in the mobile and it has three scales 20,200 and 2000

I'm gonna go with Hilltop on this and say , Yes , very liberal meter. And regardless of that , Yes , the 55HP is a great radio , mine has been my main talker since I got it last year. Mine has an echo board added in it , talkback would be nice to dial in the echo when you wanna use it , might add a switchable talkback in the near future.

throw all them crap meters in the garbage, your getting a false reading! It's not physically possible to get near 90 watts out of that thing.

Strange. I use a Radioshack meter and my readings area always right on the money when compared to the "norm". Guess it's just the luck of the draw. Either that or your meter is out of calibration. Let us know what you find out with that Dosy meter.

Ok 1st I would like to thank those of you that are quick to call (B.S) and to alert some one that is dishing it out, now with a nice, well nice to me, Dosy PM-1000-Ts meter, my results are as follows: with the selector set at 30 watts-11 watts dead key, and with the selector set at 300 watts- 35 peak watts, i hope that i am reading this scale right. I am assuming that with the selector set at 300 i still read the 30 watt scale by adding a zero or a 10 to the values displaed on that scale? Well I hope this clears up any uncertanties on this mater, but Im sure if thears any left some one here will call ( B.S ) at the drop of a hat!
