Browning MkIII / MkIV Audio Mods

#375271

Post by bushpusher »

Are there any proven transmit audio modifications for both the Browning MkIII and MkIV. I did a search but there isn't much info on these old boat anchors. Searching the web there isn't any concrete mods that are reversible. I did see a mod to disable the audio clipper in the MkIV but not much else. I don't have interest in rack gear or injection, just something to maybe improve the frequency response or increase the modulation %. If anyone can steer me in the right direction as far as information I would appreciate it. Thank you.

I have a few mics wired to my Brownings...D104 both powered and not, 776, echomax 2000. They all seem to work well on the MkIII. I can't seem to adjust the clipper/audio sensitivity properly on the MkIV, so nothing I try really sounds good.

I've only had limited experience with the Browning radios but I found the MKIV had a tad more bass in it's design, I was using a TUG8 D104 at the time. If it hasn't been done capping is the first order of business especially in the audio circuit, second would be tubes.

I have a bunch of high quality 63v caps that I am going to install in place of the originals. I will probably use modern axials to replace the twistlocs under the chassis. Thank you.
