Re: what was your first computer.
My first (this is 1988) was an IBM I pulled out of a dumpster at the FDA's Greenbelt facility, brand new, a employee there chucked several in it out of the warehouse, it even had a 2500baud modem and had a 5 1/5 floppy drive installed, ran IBM DOS. The monitor was the mono screen green. I did have a Commodore and a Texas Instrument too. Back there you could go to the library and borrow books with "REM" software programs to install.

Timex Sinclair 1000. Used a cassette tape recorder as a memory device. Supremo-cheapo.

Had to be MS-DOS, Windows didn't come out until 1990.

I remember when Windows 3.0 came out it was free but in order for it to work you had to buy an MS mouse for $30, hence the 3.0,,lol.

Re: what was your first computer.
First computer? You mean you people have had more than one? Must be a bunch of millionaires on this site...
Guess I do need to get a new monitor tho...maybe one that can show pictures...and one that you don't have to put the phones receiver in a cradle to get a internet connection...but that would require getting DSL, and that's probably not going to happen anytime soon since all that's available here is dial-up.

Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.

Re: what was your first computer.
A rock.
Wait, that was my first CB or maybe truck, can't remember.
First computer was an Atari 130XE. It wasn't a joke or a video game. It was a serious Home / Business computer (for the time). I had a computer expert (the top computer guru for a billion dollar international organization and they farmed him out to IBM, Wang, Dell and even Apple because he knew so much about computers) recommend it. It had an 8" screen that was Orange on Black instead of the traditional green or white and, it had two (count them, 2) 5 1/4" floppy disc drives, one for a program and one for data. This thing replaced 3 electronic typewriters and a huge IBM accounting machine that weighed 250 Lbs. at our company. We did all our communications, business letters etc, accounting and inventory on that thing. The 130 in the name referred to the HUGE 130 Megs of ram. The really cool thing about it was for every keystroke, it would beep. So if the office manager was typing a letter, you'd hear beep, beep, beep. Wow, we thought we were living in the future with all that computer beeping going on in the office all day long. After 6 months we upgraded to a COLOR monitor with an unbelievable 16 colors! What a machine!!

Re: what was your first computer.
A year later got an Atari ST with a 3.5" floppy drive ... super high tech! Had a program on one of those floppies that took about 15 minutes to come up with an American flag cartoon image on the screen. Then, it would start waving in the wind and everyone would cheer.
