Say what kinds of microphones do you guys
like or dislike?

I have an astatic D104M handheld that I like best but it's wired
for my 148 ssb and is the only one I have for it so it should really stay
with that radio.

I have 2 base stations.
The 139 ssb has a diesel 4-10 noise canceling.
I was happy with it's high output but some of my audiophile cb friends
say it sounds 'muffled'.

I have a royce am base with the stock mic that I am using most often
right now. It still has the stock mic because it's got a unique wiring scheme.
I've always had to talk quite loud with it to get significant output on the modulation
meter. I'm tired of talking that loud and lately operators have been saying 'what? what?'
and I realize the modulation is not making it into the red.

I realize I can turn up a VR in the royce so I can modulate more/talk softer
but I'm hesitant to do that, the radio is totally unmolested and its the
most audiophile sounding CB I've got.

Of all my mics, I like the D104M handheld best. They are quite expensive I think.
I could get two (or more) sound reinforcement mics for my band for the price of some
of these cb mics. And those mics sound great especially if they don't have to pick
up sound from across the room. If you talk into them, they sound way better than
any cb mic I have ever used.

I have a 636L on my base, and am always told that I sound great, and clear. Also told that I sound alot better then when I used my stock mic

I like my RK-56, it provides a nice clear big audio sound. I also have the 636L and it also has great reviews from the mud ducks.

I have RK56's, Skythumpers, Astatics, but the Astatic 636l fits my voice best out of all of them. I even use a 636 on my base setup.

I have a 636L and often wonder if the RK would give me a little more bottom end for my weenie lil voice! Get great reports on sound and clarity with it.

Yeah, it sounds awesome over the air. I run it through a mixer, tube preamp and effects processor and get some really nice audio.....and lots of it! This is a current pic as I made a couple of changes.

I run a astatic 575-m6 #1 audio all around by far. I also like the skythumper st-65 and the astatic 636L in that order.

I use to only run the RK-56's, but the last few I had, all sounded a little muffled, not sure if they have changed something or not, but I don't think the quality is still there, since Barjan started building them...Now all I run is the Astatic 636L's....Course they too are now produced by barjan, but I haven't had near as many problems with them like I had with the RK's...Mater-A-fact, haven't had any problems with my Astatics.

Another big problem with the RK-56, is the wires in the cords seem to be just too tiny, and break easy where there soldered on the Mic plugs....

So the 636 seems to be a favorite.
Are they the ones that are available for $20
or are those copies?

Anyone know if they are available with the 4 conductor plug for royce/robyn?

Also wondering if anyone knows how it compares with the diesel mics.
Not their cheap stock type but the more hefty noise canceling diesels.
I'd like to know if the 636 is going to be at least as loud as the diesel
and how the tone compares. I'm trying to sound less 'muffled' and get a better copy.
I have a lot of deep tones in my speech and don't want a big bass boost.
I've always got good reports with my D104M, but I want to keep it in my mobile.

I'm looking to replace the quiet stock mic and the 'muffled' diesel mic on my base stations.

I don't think the 636 has a battery.

Anyone have a recommendation for something with a battery?
I don't really need it to beep or reverb. I just want the best copy possible.
Do you think think a double double talk talker is cool cool?

Didn't know if I'd like my ST-65DX, but get nice clean reports with it. No complaints here, except that the spring on the PTT is a little tight and in long keydowns if my thumb flexes, it makes a squeek between the casing and the PTT button cover, which I'm sure is picked up loudly by the RX end.

If you stretch it tight enough you might be able to play a tune to the person on the other end!

MY PERSONAL OPINION IS THAT I THINK THE ASTATIC 636L IS ONE OF THE BEST MICS OUT THERE AND YOU GET THEM IF YOU LOOK HARD ENOUGH TO WHERE YOU MAY PAY $19 OR SO. THAT IS JUST MY PERSONAL OPION AND WE ALL KNOW THAT COULD LEAD!!!! HA!ha!

I'm for the 575 Astatic, hand down. It's on all my vehicles, and as you know from my previous posts, I'm an audio oriented gal.

It behooves me that some enterprising young company doesn't want to take the design, change a doo-dad or two to get around copyright and have a winner. Look what they are going for on Epay, and those are all beat up.

I bought a Skythumper ST-65DX from Sparky's. I have no complaints about it. I've been told it's clearer than my stock Uniden mic (which I'm told and have also heard that they are also pretty good for stock mics). If I'd known about a $20 Astatic 636, then I would have jumped on that like a fat kid on a cupcake (no offense, I was a fat kid). You just can't go wrong for $20, especially since there are so many people out there that like them. I've heard that some think they sound tinny whereas the RK-56 sounds more bassy. You may be hard-pressed to find someone who has compared the 636 to the exact mic you're talking about, but may instead get a general idea about what to try. I've never heard anyone say the 636 sounds muffled, only that's it's very clear.

I recently ordered a RF Limited EC-2018 Xtreme echo/power/noise canceling mic to spice things up a bit. I'll have to report back when I get it (tomorrow), but I've heard great things about them. That way echo can go on whatever radio I may upgrade to in the future.

I can't help you on the Royce/Robyn issue, but I can tell you that any decent aftermarket mic being discussed here is easily leaps and bounds ahead of most stock mics.

I have tried the sky thumper, road king, diesel noise canceling, ant the astatic 636L and so far everyone has told me to stick with the 636L because it had the clearest audio. These were all tried on a SWP General Lee. Just my two cents.

i personally like using the SkyThumper 65-DX for my General Lee and the 636L for my Saturn base.its funny because if i switch them around people say switch them back.if your sounding muffled in your audio might want to try and turn your mic gain down abit.

I'm surprised I don't see more people talking up the D104
I don't need talkback so I like them.
The only neg I ever heard about them
is that it makes the talkback squeal.
Well, with the mic all the way up
the talkback volume is very touchy.
Isn't D104 a model up from 636

Other than the stock mics; the only other one I use is my 'ole trusty RK-56. It has taken a beating -literally! Sparky can attest to the marks - and other than replacing the cord due to it's age, it has worked like a charm. Clean audio.
