Just wait until that first international contact, on 11m these days, most likely it will be central or south america.... Then tell us how hooked you become.

Yeah, I remember my first skip contact, I was camping in Az at the time, and talked to 315 Boca Raton Florida on 38lsb. She was coming in so loud I couldn't believe she was nowhere near me.
First International was some guy, hard as all get out to understand, in Cozumel Mexico... Again on 38lsb... Very broken English, but VERY happy to have made an international contact...
That was all so long ago it's not even funny.

My very first skip contact was to a guy in Bermuda. I was talking on an old JC Penny 23 ch base station with a 102" whip, bare foot. I thought it was the coolest thing in the world, later I got a polomar tx75 for free at a garage sale ( because they dident know what it was) and started talking to people all over the place. Been on the radio off and on since I got my first car when I was 14, its been a fun inexpensive hobby.

Skip is as good as a sport due to the rush you get to make a long distance contact. I can't remember my first. It was in the mid 70's. My dad purchased a midland mobile 23 channel and a Palomar 300. To go with it a Astroplane. Has anyone seen a astroplane. It has been a while for me except for the one in the top of my dad's shop. He still has the antenna. I can remember the farthest I ever talked it Lema Peru. Clear as a bell. I was about 11years old. The CB was the best back then. Everyone had a CB. A thing that is more or less gone is QSL cards. I had a mirror full and just about a draw full with the contacts I had made. A lot of international and US. I guest the cost of mail is to high now. It is still a great inexpensive hobby to meet a lot of good PLL and then there are some bad. Always some bad apples in the bunch, but for the most part very nice folks.
I just wanted to put my 2 cents in.

Being at the bottom of the solar cycle makes it tough to talk skip. When you do get a skip now days it's most likely from a phenomena called sporadic "E". This happens mostly in the summer and usually just when the sun starts to set. So if your a die hard skip shooter and are getting board start trying at dawn. You might get a good contact. We have to rely on the "E" until the sun starts shooting some flares at us!
