I hope this radio is considered a classic. But here is what is happening I key up with my meter in line and it shows off freq. by a lot on channel 27.205 but when I key up it will show 22.5645 and then slowly go lower as long as I hold the key down. Before you say it is my meter it isn't cause on my grant xl it shows dead on 27.2050 other channels are right on. Also since I thought it might be the radio I went out 3 miles and couldn't hear my wife and no carrier but it showed up about 2 miles away and was on freq cause there was no distortion in the audio. Can any one lead me to what might be wrong with this radio. By the way the radio shows a 3.5 watt dk and swings to 15 watts Please help

Hi Grump,

I don't have my Sam's Photo facts with me right now; it is in Sam's # 235. If the Cobra 89 GTL uses a crystal matrix does this condition happen on just a few of the channels or all of them.

If it uses a (PLL) a Phase Lock Loop chip to create the frequencies this condition should happen on all of the channels. Try pressing on the circuit board near the VCO, and see if it comes back on frequency.

That is where I would start, let me look it up and and I can get back to you.
Respectfully as always,

Rick

Thanks for the reply cb doctor did more testing and if I leave it keyed a few seconds the modulation meter will climb to about 60% then drop and will be on the right frequency. Could this be a bad capacitor
