well what do you plan on doing with it. how much power are you going to run.

my first thought was a cobra 2000 with RG8x and an IMAX2000 antenna. =]
then add you a little heater purchased from one of the sponsors here.

Oh i think one of them (sponsors) even specialize in cobra 2000's too!

man am i biased or what.. no really.. i love my setup and wouldn't change a thing!

2 questions you need to answer first. what are you planning on using it for, and what is your budget.

Though your taste may change, the best first approach for most is a vertical antenna, like an IMAX 2000 or an Antron 99. The sponsors can help you with selection based on price and needs and coax wise on a base use some RG213 or LMR400 if the run is long and you are all about quality. If it is a shorter run and you aren't really a perfectionist, some RG8X for a run of 75 feet or shorter will do without noticed loss. Get the antenna up to where the BASE of it is as high as possible, a MINIMUM of 20 feet but better to get it up 35 or more for good range and minimal neighbor television and consumer electronic interference from your signal. Radios are a whole other topic but many use a mobile radio on a power supply as they are cheaper, more plentiful, more versatile, and easier to sell. For that matter, you can have one great radio and move it from the mobile to the house if you have to. You may also want a base microphone, and if that's the case, the Astatic D104 is a decades long favorite of many but there are others like Turners, Sadeltas, Cobras, Shure, and more. If you're really wanting to get serious or know that you eventually will, don't skimp on gear and antenna. Go ahead and buy good or you will end up spending more upgrading. If you do the mobile on a power supply setup, get a good power supply, something like an Astron, and a good set of meters is always nice to have.
