Pop that plate off and see what's under there. What it amounts to is several 'cells' sealed with a stopper type cap. When a gell cell is discharged too quickly, or charged too quickly, gas is generated in that little 'doo-gee' until it over powers those seals. Then it vent's the gases. That venting doesn't have to be fast, or explosive, it can be almost undetectable. But it's there. Ever smelled a gell cell being charged? Fumes...
If I were going to have to use a largish battery in the house it would be a gell cell type thingy. That doesn't mean that they are absolutely safe, just safer.

As to exactly what those gases are, I have no idea. Not too sure I want to find out either.
...uh the answer to that is explosive Doc

Sheriff Bart,
Oh, I do agree! I've sort of dealt with that a few times. That exploding battery thingy is an 'immediate' kind of thing. The 'fumes' of a 'real slow' explosion are an entirely different matter. It can change your vision over a period of time. And that's the least of your worries with that stuff. I know what that 'stuff' is in a 'wet cell', no idea what it is in a gel cell. Still don't wanna find out!

What ever is the closes window to your radio room, get ya a couple of 2x4's and make ya a small stand big enough for the battery to sit on and have it about 4 feet off the ground, that should take care of any gasses issues.... Dave :bigsmurf:
