since I first posted on this subject things have changed around my ponderosa. Along with the Robyn SB520-D and the 148GTL-DX I now have an AR-3500 a TRC458, a Telsat 1240, a Johnson Viking 4740 and a 29LTD Classic and all of them are fine, one for each day of the week.

Browning and Tram (Titan II and the d201 series)sound great without gimmicks. Requires more effort to operate especially SSB.

Nice looking radios guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a RA RCI-2980wx with a Texas Star 250, LMR-400 to a Imax-2000 mounted in free space. I won't tell you what my Diawa CN-801 PEP reading watt meter says the output is because I don't want to start a fight here. I've read on this site others getting what I'm getting with mine but when they admitted what there output was they were tortured. I know my meter is reading accurate because it reads exactly on with my other radios rated output. Getting back to the base radios I like it very much and would recommend it to anyone wanting a great base radio.

Out of the choices given, I chose the 2985dx. I prefer my 2995 for a newer style rig, and usually do my talking on either the Robyn 240 or the Skipper 73. Someday I'll get me an Browning.

There are a couple of good sites if you want to learn about Browning.

Go here to learn about the Browning Company. You will learn a great deal at the Myths/Facts/Fallacies page.

the Dak's where another legendary radio. As for modern Cobra 2000gtl 142 Gtl killer audio circuit and with the right tech they have full punchy audio. I have been in Radio for 19 years . I have had Saturn's, 2950's Galaxy's and etc. Still my bench holds a 142gtl for CB am and various power goodies. SSB I would say President Lincoln, 2510. Bopper's radio also has killer crisp am audio that is why I snagged one up the minute I found one. I am waiting on it's arrival as we speak.

Maybe you cant get a browning base anymore, but there is a little circuit that can make you sound like one:

Browning claims that the authentic ping is never the same from one key-up to the next.
I think it was mechanically generated in the microphone.
Circuit up your radio all you want. Nothing sounds like a Browning. Just like the Harley/Metric debate. You may get close but, sorry charlie no cigar. The ping in a Browning is not in the microphone. It was discovered in the original design. Somewhere in all the circuitry there was a flaw. A capacitor was storing energy in the receiver and dumping in into the transmitter when keying up. The engineers decided to keep it as a trademark for the radio.

I have a Mark IVa and wouldn't trade it for anything. Talk about audio... Professionally added are 3 caps of different size connected to a 4 position rotating type switch. I can have no ping, short, medium, long. Put it on channel 19 some time with the long ping and let it rip. LOL. The drivers go nuts.
