Dead key 2950dx
Ok have three of these radios i got new . Trying to turn dead key down it was like 8 or 9 ,so i can loan it to a friend to run with a palomar 500 eliete base ,i guess it needs something like 2 wattts ?? Ok when you get in there vr-19 low power is turned all the way down ,to the left ,so then i go to vr -15 a/f power it,s pretty much wide open ,so if you back it down to get dead key to 2 watts with a dead no talking you get noise like wind rushing by a window .So i opened up my other one, vr -19 turned clear down so i didn,t mess with it .I have one in local truck stop cb shop here butt don,t have much faith in them she was fighting it last night when i left it there . I have done this with my 2990 -and 2995 and it worked great, Any clues ?????????? Thanks ....... ps is 2 watts right for that palomar ?????

Without someone having experienced the same or similar problem from one of that series of radios it will not easily be diagnosed via online. It's just one of those many uncommon issues that will likely take a good tech to repair. I hope the local can fix it for you but if not I'd look into sending it off to a reputable tech.

No it's not the nature of them. I run a 2985DX which is nothing but a 2950DX in a base case. I can run the carrier at whatever I choose with no odd noises. Are you saying all yours do it or just the one radio?

So, where are you hearing the wind noise sound? Is it something you're picking up via another receiver or what? Something is weird here, if it is happening to all 3 radios. Are you getting reports of the wind noise from others? If so, could it be that the carrier is so low it is static and not wind? So, from the box the carrier was 8-9 watts with the rf knob all the way down? Check on the rangerusa website if nothing else, or maybe contact them. They're near San Diego, and in the pacific time zone if you try to call. The last thing you need is a bunch of 'teknishins' fingering the thing all up, especially on a new radio, let alone 3.

Yep pretty much like you say drdx ,i described it as a wind sound . Tech lady said it was osalation . and i,am sure thats not spelled right . I did actually get one down to 2 watts and stayed fairly clean .. But there were around 6-9 watts .. thanks .

Man, I'd just call them. Especially with 3 of them, shipping could be done all at once and you being the original new buyer you'd have a good voice with them. About 20 years ago when the 2950 first came out they had issues and some friends dealt with them and the service was great and that was in the early days before they were as established but I think they're still in the same place.

Something is truly odd about this if three different units are doing it. I can't say I've heard of this issue with them and with the internet if this was a common problem surely we would hear of it often considering the huge numbers of them sold and being run. Are the serial numbers on them somewhat close to one another? I know RCI has had some issues in the past with bad component purchases which caused failures with their radios. Those were probably cases of the cheapest bid to supply a component may not be the best option. I'd do as Dr. Dx suggests and try calling Ranger since they are new.
