rci 2950 talkback...

I have tryed to mod my RCI 2950 for talkback, by installing a 1watt 100ohm resistor on the ext and pa jacks. Nothing.. I was wondering if the 2018 xtreme echo mic would give me talkback, since the mic info said if the radio has receive when the mic is unplug it would not give me talkback, if the radio has no receive when mic is unplug it would. The 2950 has receive when the mic is unplug.
Just wondering if the mic would give me talkback or i would have to have the talkback installed into the radio, via the relay mod?
I know these are a different type board and says a experience tech needs to do the mods.

Hi Corn_Bread,
I had a 2950 (non dx) and I followed the directions from RCI's webpage and it was the easiest best way to add talkback to these radios. In the end I took it off b/c I got annoyed of not having an on/off switch. As far as the 2018, I think you're right that if the radio works without the mic plugged in (For example, export radios) then the talkback does not work. I had a 2018 Xtreme on a 2950DX and on a G. Lee and the talkback on the mic did not work.

January Tech Tip of the Month:If you would like to add Talk Back to the RCI-2950/70 - pre DX models, it is just an easy modification. All you have to do is remove D78 from the circuit board. Simple, short and sweet!
By the way, you can just unsolder 1 leg and lift it off the PCB so you can re-solder it back in later. I don't cut anything....ever.

Hi Corn_Bread

The 2950 has a diode that kills talk back in any mode except for CW. On most exports the diode is labeled D-80. I believe on the 2950 it is labeled D-78. It is near the audio transformer towards the mid-front on the right hand side. Just cut the diode; you can put a switch on it to be able to turn it on and off.

Good luck,
Respectfully as always,

Rick
