Squelch Adjustment

#316244

Post by Remo »

Hi all, It seems to me ( when compared to other radios ) the squelch in my Cobra 29 WX NW ST Classic is a little low. Meaning, I need to turn it up more than I do on other radios, to achieve the same effect.

Coming home from a road trip today, I noticed that if I turned up the squelch all the way, it still did not seem to do much. This happened yesterday as well.
Is there a pot or some other adjustment I can do inside the radio to get the Squelch to respond accordingly ?

Sounds like a bad pot.... i had to have the one in my Connex 3400HP replaced when it started acting flakey... You can try some spray, might be a cold solder joint, But with mine that was the issue... $20.00 fix in my case.

Greetings...I would wait a few days or a couple of weeks before you do anything to any pots in your radio as we are in a period of excessive noise on AM due to sunspot activity and the large amount of "skip" going on around the world in DX land.

if he had to turn it up all the way, with no affect, undoubtedly as described there is a problem in the circuit... When the skip was booming using a pre amp on the amplifier I could still squelch out the noise/skip with a 20Db boost...

Skip doesn't run 24/7 so you should be able to find a quiet channel and try it... But if your cranking it all the way I would still have it looked as there is something amiss there.

Why?
All that has to be done is to disconnect the antenna turn the volume up until you hear white noise and adjust the squelch sensitivity pot to the point where you want the outboard control to have it squelched.

Hope that works for him.. I had to have mine replaced, it went south after a month and had to have it replaced, which I did, most places are about a 20 dollar fee... Guess you'll have to do some investigative work and let us know.

Too add.. What tipped me off was the fact that it wouldn't stay put ... It went from not working at all to where any noise come in, to where I would have to roll it all the way left to get anything to come through... Mine was pretty obvious after the 3rd week of use though..

Ooops...my bad...I thought I read his question good, but I missed the fact he had to turn it all the way up or my mind tricked me into thinking something else...You are correct and I was wrong...

Yeah sometimes that's the difficulty in non face to face communications...it's hard sometimes to understand correctly the intended meaning of posts or emails or what have you when the human face to face interaction is not present. We lose the ability to read body language, facial expressions, etc...I forget that sometimes and have a tendancy to miss-understand what has been said or asked, but for the most part we get it right. Thanks for correcting me...and above all else...I am one that will admit when I am wrong...
