Galaxy 959 12v line

Any body know where the 12v locations are inside my DX959? I need to find a spot to power my echo board, It came with instructions but it is all wiring it through the mic plug on the inside of the radio, and the only Power line there is 8v

Take it off of J4 on the side of the plug that has voltage with the power switch in the on position.

J4 on my PCB lay out and radio is marked, TO/blue wire, and GA/ purple wire. You know what one is the 12v line? Or were you saying i gotta check it with the multi meter ?

I just tested both the lines and i did not get 12v out of it, i negative voltage out of both of them. Any other ideas? I keep looking at the PCB layout and all i can find is 8v lines

Hi dime196604,

Looking at the solder side of the board you will see on the left front corner 5 solder points. One of them is 8 volts and one of the points is 12 volts (13.8v depending on the voltage supplied). This point comes on and off with the switch. There is also another 12 volt point that has a constant voltage. Connect to the switchable solder point.

If you are getting a negative 12 volts then your leads are backward. There are no negative 12 volt supplies on that radio. Also keep in mind that radio's case is not ground. Put the negative lead of your meter on the power jack or any I.F. can.

If you looked at the schematic for the 959 you would see that the on/off switch is connected to J4

I think what the problem was is that i was using the chassis as ground when i was testing it

Thanks CB doctor i checked where you said and 2 of them are 12v that turn on with the radio and one that is constant 12v

WHY WHY WHY! add an echo board!!!! On my 949 I get the same performance with a CHEAP echo mic!

Because a cheap mic give you a cheap sound!

I know this thread is old, but J4 isnt switched.

CB Doctor has the answer and is right about him checking with his leads backwards. I also would add a micro switch on the radio somewhere to be able to turn it off depending what board you have.

I didnt say anything about how he was using his volt meter, J4 isnt switched. Why put on a micro switch when theres switched power on the board side like he already stated, just trying to help others looking for this info.

The switch is to turn the echo on or off when the radio is on, otherwise it stays on and always have an echo, if it was an AM radio it wouldn't matter much but with a SSB radio it would be nice to turn it off.

Im more concerned if in a vehicle, echo or backlit switchs always stays on when the radio is turned off. Echo board has a control knob to turn off for SSB, SMH. I was just not wanting someone looking for switchable 12v and not snipping & splicing into a 12v source that stays on when the radio is off. I just had to fix a 959 that someone followed these directions to splice into J4, gotta be more specific with instructions because "guests" can Google this and see this post, then snip into something that was wrong. Like i said......J4 is not switched,Its live 12v. TRBx1,TRBx2,TRBx3 and the Astatic echo boards have a control knob for amount of echo that when you turn all the way to the left there's a clicking noise that tells you it's off......by the way, Astatic echo boards only need 8v, not 12 or 13.8 or it will be damaged.

The point that CB Doctor is suggesting in his post is switched by the on/off/volume control on the radio, it is also a good spot for the 8v source you need for the Astatic boards. The switch I am suggesting is to turn the echo board off when the radio is on and you don't want the echo. The Astatic does come with a pot (knob) to turn it off and control the timing of the echo, some of the older models do not, adjustments are made inside the radio, once the cover is on, your stuck with it or keep popping the cover. When the radio is turned off everything will be off or should be hooked up that way. His comment was also about the multimeter leads being backwards.

Wow this is a old post. I ran the echo board to where cb doc told me to, and it only has power when the radio is on, I have checked and rechecked many times and the board I used has a on/off pot so a switch is not needed
