mag mount paint

#343801

Post by uscgwagner »

Hello all.

I was wondering if you have any ideas on minimizing the chance of scratching the paint on my car when using a mag mount. But also not have the mag mount lose its ability to hold to the car.

Thanks
Nate

I have a cheap mag mount and a cheap am radio that i want to put in my car but don't want to damage paint because its a new car.

Hey Nate..

I use a Wilson 1000 mag-mount.

A piece of one of your wife or GF's nylons works great. Just trim it the same size as the mag-mount.

Hi uscgwagner,
Bombero's idea works great for the magnet, most magnet mount antennas come with a felt bottom but it wears off after a while. The other problem with magnet mounts is the coax, it vibrating in the wind does more damage to the paint than the magnet itself. The clear coat on new vehicles is easy to repair with scratch remover. My suggestion apply a good coat of wax in the area of the antenna and move the coax around so it isn't in the same place.

Excellent idea with the nylons. Woulda never thought of that. And as far as having the car waxed it is waxed at LEAST once a month. Lol. For the Coax it doesn't really touch the paint because i have the mag mount on the trunk lid and the coax goes between the back window and leading edge of the trunk lid.

Thanks for the suggestions!!

I have used shelf liner plastic to put on the bottom of the mount and it works good. the shelf liner is a very thin plastic sheet and some has a light adhesive on it. I would stick it on the mag mount and it was there forever. water proof and all since it is plastic. protected my paint and a lot of others around.

You can certainly reduce the amount of wear to the area under that magnet, but you will never stop it. There will always be something get under that magnet and get rubbed between it and the metal of the car. May not be very apparent, but it will happen. Best thing is to just keep it clean as best you can.

Doc,

Yes I understand that i will never fully stop stuff from getting under it. Life you said my goal is to minimize as much as as i can. Its a 2013 VW jetta SEL and the first car that I've bought brand new.. So I'm trying to keep it nice... Now my 98 exploder with 255k on it i could really care less...

What do you guys think about electrical tape on the bottom???

Thanks

You might try putting a thin layer of clear silicon over the base of the magnet mount and letting it dry before putting it on your vehicle, or of you don't intend to remove the magnet mount antenna any time soon let the silicon dry to both the magnet mount and the paint on the vehicle itself. The silicon will be about as good of a seal as you can get to keep things out, and when it comes time to remove the antenna it will simply rub off the paint on the car and the magnet. Just make sure that the areas it is applied to are clean before applying. To my knowledge, this is as close to a truely maintenance free magnet mount setup as you can get.

Yeah I'm not really looking to put silicone on a new car.. I'll just do like the others have said and use shelf liner or nylons. That should work fine.I'll just have to keep up with what I'm doing right now as far as waxing and stuff. But thanks for the idea.
