SO 239 question and alternative
In my search for mobile antenna system perfection, I have discovered an undesirable trait in SO239 thingy's. I'm really only talking about antenna stud mount type. With the only exception being the "K40 MaxiMount" all SO 239 connections are flat around the edge (with out the notch for the PL 259 connectors nip to lock into) what this does for me is, makes an unstable connection allowing water and what not to sneak in. Being that this is on the outside of my vehicle, it makes me unhappy.
So, I wanted advice on options.
Use a Dremel to notch out a 239.
Grind off the nips of the 259.
Use a lug mount, which I'm nervous about exposing to the elements, and I don't understand how it can be efficient.
The reason I don't just use the K40 is that it is a one piece stud and the top where the antenna screws in is very small in comparison to my predator 10k. I would like to use the nice thick Predator Acorn stud for a solid mount.
I'm gonna guess lug mount is the best option but I do t understand how or if it is legit.

I don't see any harm in notching the 239 or grinding the 259 but I don't know if it would really help keep water out any better.
The lug mount is fine as long as its done correctly and the coax sealed with liquid tape or similar.
I'm pretty sure I've had stud mounts that are notched but I haven't bought or used one in a long time. I'm a lug mount or puck kind of guy.

Does the lug mount have any benefit in a barefoot system? I'm under the impression they only benefit high power amplified systems and or space limitations.
Currently running a barefoot Stryker 655.
Thinking about getting a Texas Star 500.
I'm probably crazy, but I feel like velocity factor would be effected in a lug mount. Or even overall signal efficiency. I picture it like a water hose, putting hard angles or awkward connections always makes water pressure inefficient and introduces.... grrrr can't think of the word for it!

The lug mount has no benefits that you will see. It is a much stronger way to mount the antenna. Big heavy antennas can start to pull the inner piece of the so239 mount out over time. The lug will work just fine as long as you do neat work and seal it.

I agree with 543, the SO239 break off easy when using a heavy or long antenna, most are made of brass. Some threads are even too short for the mounts they come with. The lug is the best way to go and with all the sealers, dielectric grease, and pressure sensitive sealing tapes on the market, making it waterproof isn't a problem. I only use the SO239 mounts for the easy no-brainer installs like my pickup.

I suppose I'll do some research on lug mount and give it a try.
One more question...
Does having an FME thingy affect anything? Makes it handy to push cable through small holes but seems small and weak to me...
