Question Regarding The Antenna And Lightning

#360259

Post by CrazyShellsSlam »

I have a Wilson MiniWil and just recently rehooked up my Radio in my Mini Van and have a question about Extension Cords.

How I have this setup currently is the Antenna is running to the back of the van and out the Passenger Side back Windows(its one of those Windows that ajars a couple of inches in one side) and have the Antenna sitting on the roof in the center of the Van. My concern now with Summer and random storms is the Antenna getting Struck and taking out the Van in someway electrically. The radio itself is not hard wired. I plug it into one of the Cigarette Lighter ports when I want to use it and unplug it when I am not. My concern is that even though the Radio is not plugged in, since the Antenna is sitting on the roof, if lightning strikes it it will do some damage to the Antenna, Radio or the Van.

I was wondering if it would be worth it to rig up an Extension Cord so that way if I know a storm is coming I can just unplug the Antenna and take it down without having to run wires again and again.

Of course if I am just being silly and there is no need for concern then thats ok too :).

I am just getting back into the hobby and would like to have a somewhat permanent setup in my Van but be able to take the Antenna down just incase, if I even have to at all.

I wouldn't worry about it. Lightning is looking for a ground and your van makes a horrible path to ground. It is possible for the van to get struck by lightning but highly unlikely.

Been into CB since the Mid 70's...and not once can I remember anyone ever having a problem with lightning striking a CB Antenna on a vehicle...

I think if it happened, the odd's would be something like a 1 in a Trillion...

i have seen 2 vehicles stuck by lightning and they were both totaled out,, almost every module in the car was fried, insurance companies didn't even want to get involved with fixing them,, they gave the owners a check and that was it..

I think wi544 made the point here, just make sure the vehicle has full coverage, insurance wise.

Awesome. In that case I'll just leave it where it is. :)
