skip lately???

#361448

Post by mty pocketz »

Has anybody been getting any good skip lately? I haven't been turning my RF gain up or changing channels much lately, but when I do, I haven't been hearing much of anything, even on the superbowl. Not sure if skip is on a low cycle or if it's my setup.
I'm running the same setup I had on my International prostar, but it's now on my Freightliner Cascadia. 5' Everhardt is mounted on a perch attached to my mirror mount, which brings it a few feet lower than before. I'm sure that may affect a good bit, but I don't know. Seems to be getting out and receiving pretty well locally.

Been a lot quieter than it was a few months ago. I think when you first got your radio skip was booming. Just like when I got back in it June of 2013. Skip has kind of fizzled out a bit this year. changed directions and absent all together some days. It takes the excitement out of it when dx is dead for days and it seems like it's not going to get any better. I never hear the uk anymore. I used to hear those guys every single morning. Now white noise takes their place mostly. Not your radio duke just the sign of the times.

Mostly on the local channel 6, but all around the bands. 6-10 pounds.

This WAS with 1/2 wave dipole rig ...

Glad to hear its not just my radio. I've been getting good range, it seems. Just haven'tbeen hearing skip like before. I miss hearing Cancer man nationwide:)

One of these days I need to check my swr on my new setup.

BTW, painting an antenna seems to have no negative effect on performance. It looked funny having a blue antenna on a red truck, so I Krylon'ed it red

Turned my 3-element beam NW from SW FL and briefly contacted 269 on the west coast of CA. Not bad for 10W out, a D104, and an 8db gain antenna 35' up. Mother Nature definitely plays the biggest part.

I’ve been hearing a lot of skip coming in of late. Mostly from the south up into the north east. I have even heard guys from New Mexico and Cali recently. Jamaica and PR not to mention a bunch of other Spanish speaking operators. Made a good strong contact on my barefoot radio to a guy in Texas for a few minutes last week. Some of these guys are coming in so strong and clear its like they are right now the street from me. Amazing.

True that 182. Some days 2000 watts into my 3-element beam can't get the job done and other days I talk across the country on 80 watts easily. Skip has been pretty low out here in Pgh lately but when it's decent, conditions have shifted to Cali. For the past few months I've talked to a ton of Texas stations. It's all about maw nature indeed. I'm on 28 AM 90% of the time if anyone wants to shout out.
