New antenna location on a different car

Many of you know that I had a dodge caliber with my sirio antenna mounted on the hatchback door. I had it located on the center of my hatchback and it did work really well. If it was directional I couldn't tell it all that much. I bought my wife a new car and traded in my caliber now I have her old car which is a Suzuki SX. I don't like drilling a hole in the cab area just because of leaks and that's what I liked about the caliber. It was mounted on the hatch door which if it leaked it would leak in the gutter area and not in the car. This car here I can't mount on the hatch area there is not enough room when you open the door. I bought this sirio trunk mount and the only place I can mount it is on the side like in the picture. I haven't done it yet. Will this antenna in this location be effective and can I get a low swr since its on the side of the car and not on top?

Nothing wrong with that location SE1, it will be a little directional, you will notice it when you turn. The sweet spot is always somewhere in the center of the roof but mounting the antenna high is best no matter where on the vehicle. If you have a SWR meter with the field strength capability and a 100ft tape measure, you can plot the effects of the location, you'll see it doesn't change much, just a slight null in that corner.

I may have to figure out another way because I only had it on there a few minutes and where I had to tighten the set screws to secure the mount it made dimples in the exterior of the car. Not bad but bad enough I want to kick myself in the rear end. i didn't think it would do that because the metal is doubled where it mounted it. Kind of afraid to put the weight of the antenna on it now because it will make the dimples worse if it moved any. There just isn't any way to mount this antenna like I had it on my caliber. I'm trying to avoid mag mount but it looks like that's where I'm headed.

Any ideas on a mount? Not possible to use the trunk mount on the top it won't fit at all. The spoiler takes up all the room for hole mounting on the rear hatch.

How far apart are the ridges on the roof as the pl145 mag mount is about 6". It will work better than the current setup IMO as you will be getting the antenna up onto the roof. The mag mounts aren't as bad as some would lead you to believe. Proper care and a bit of maintenance will go a long way to keeping a mag mount working correctly. JMHO.

Mag mount may be my only option. I don't like mag mounts because they leave places on your car after a long period of time. I might go to a two way radio shop and see what they say about a professional install on the roof just in front of the car radio antenna.

Looks like I'm going through the roof after giving it long thought. Going to get my local Motorola shop to instal it because it will involve going underneath the liner.

I think center of the roof is always best, the first option you posted looks sharp though.
