HyGain SPT-500 dimensions

#390816

Post by Syntax »

Does anyone have the dimensions for a new Hygain SPT-500 Perpetrator for 11 meters? I see so many conflicting posts on this. My directions say 19' vertical length. I don't think that's correct for 11 meter use though.

Thanks!

Hello Syntax,
I moved your question to it's own topic so as to not piggy back the other. Because it is now considered a ham antenna and not suppose to be used for CB radio (hehehe) they give only the dimensions for 10m. Follow the instructions for assembly. For 11m the radial length is the same 105", they can't be made longer because of the joints would be too short. The radiator will grow to 267" or 22' 3'', spread the extra length out between all the joints but the bottom one, each joint must have at least 2" to 3" , the top section can be used to extend.
I suggest building the antenna on the ground first and make all the adjustments there, the SWR after you raise it shouldn't change much afterward.

Your post wording is a bit confusing can you re-state?

Thank you

Thank you
Which part is confusing?

Follow the assembly instructions, when you get to the vertical section stretch it out to 22' 3" but make sure each joint has at least 3"of tubing inside each other.

Like I said I like to build them on the ground first especially the HyGain, tuning the hairpin matcher isn't easy and it saves you from climbing a ladder or taking it back down several times to get it right.

The "New" HyGain SPT-500 will use the same measurements as the old HyGain Model 500 "Penetrator 500".

I would love to know the precise details of the matching section , I have my old 5/8 Skystick made by Flurey engineering in the 70's , the original matching system has failed and I have copied the SPT-500 matching system from pictures , I have been successful to get it working with some copper wire but it sure would be nice to know the diameter of the wire ( prefer metric ) and the actual lengths etc .

thanks in advance

HyGain does sell the parts you are looking for, rather inexpensive but I think shipping to "down under" might be high.

Back in the day CB'ers had a nasty habit of electrocuting themselves dropping antennas on power lines,, funny they don't think ham's done that too.. Just a legality to keep the company from being sued.

Thanks Greg , I am aware of the available parts but I want to make my own lol , I make all kinds of stuff and often customize it to a high degree
