Shootout: SWP General Lee vs GI Joes Magnum S9

#68691

Post by SmallTruckBigRadio »

I am humbled to admit that the 50 watt GI Joes Magnum S9 has edged out the 40 watt SWP General Lee in a "key down" / "shootout" contest.

The mighty Ghostman now has a grin that is causing aches in his cheeks.

This afternoon I ended up on the same "turf" as Ghostman.
Ghostman has been quite proud of his GI Joe's Magnum S9, that he has pushing an EastCoast 1x4.

For Giggles and Grins, I challenged Ghostman to a "keydown".

We set up about 15-20 miles from 3 base stations.

We compared barefoot low, barefoot high, and with power on.
We compared single signals, and then compared signal dominance by both keying up. Ghostman repeated one, one, one....and I repeated two, two, two....
Though low power was very similar, the 50 watt Magnum S9 edged out the 40 watt General Lee. The SWP General Lee reportedly had much more swing, as compared to the S9, but alas, the S9 won on signal strength.
For additional grins. We compared "power on" between the 400+ watt DaveMade 3pill, and Ghostmans 800+ watt Eastcoast 5 pill.
Yep, he won again.

Yes, I was out-classed, no the antennas were not the same, yes it was fun.
PS, I didn't have the Predator 10K mounted, I was using the Wilson 2000 at the time. Ghostman is using a Wilson 5000.
But now that I think about it, I had a building between me and two of the base stations, and I was alone, and Ghostman had a pretty young lady in his vehicle....He cheated!!! ...rematch ... rematch...!

Sidenote:
Gulleyrunner decided to join in on the barefoot contest with his supertuned / megatuned Galaxy 66.
Gulleyrunner left the contest with his antenna between his tires.

It was fun, Congratulations Ghostman!

If that doesn't do then we might have to give up.

My muscle relaxer finally took affect and I can open my eyes again. My smile had them swelled shut.  I had a good time testing radios this evening. Don't let SmallTruck fool you. That is one sweet sounding setup he has. I don't think I have ever talked to a better sounding mobile radio. It has tons of swing, more than a lot of base stations around here. I may have won this one but that Galaxy 99V may get me barefoot. We will have to wait to see. I almost feel sorry for Gulleyrunner. He is going to have to put that Palomar modulator in there at least. Later GHOSTMAN.

just a thought.. a single tube 3CX3000A7 amp can put out more watts than a 64-pill running at 14VDC,
and cost a bit less than 64-pill, and pull less electricity than a 64-pill.

32-pill at 14vdc: 7.5kw-swing for approx $2100
64-pill at 14vdc: 12kw-swing for approx $4200
3CX3000A7: 14kw-swing for approx $3500

It also seems a three-tube 3-500Z amp might be a little cheaper than a 32-pill, but does the same wattage.
My guess is a tube would last longer than pills running at 20volts, But i could be wrong.

dont forget they need drivers and a bank of batteries to run those DC boxes..
and a ton of alternators..

I don't know how soon I might try a stryker or not. I heard one with a nice sound once.

dud muck, wow thats some serious stuff. I don't expect to be beefing up the system anytime soon. My wive told me that I don' have any business trying to keep up with teenage boy.

Ghostman, it looks like we have have to hook the amp up for him...I think he's fallen and can't get up.

It sure was funny to see him pull up. I wasn't expecting that.

I'd like to see how much power theta 66V of his is putting out.

timblazer2, I can't quite memember when we spoke. Were you near Scotsburg? ch 5?, ch 14?

i was just thinking since he tries out different radio's and does shootout with them he could throw a stryker in the mix.and give us a Field review on it .because i know allot of people would like to know how it stands up to a g/l or connex.all the other big radio's.and they would buy them.sept for if you want ssb.it was just a suggestion anyways.

I enjoy testing different radios, but used radio depreciation is expensive.

I am currently using both a SWP Galaxy 99V, and a SWP General Lee. The General Lee has better receive, and more swing. The jury is still out on the other stuff. I wish I would have added variable talkback to the 99V. I was surprised that it only has on / off talkback.

Mr. RA,

I am looking for a way to get into a mosfet SWP General Lee. That may be the next itch to scratch.

A Mosfet is a different type of final power transister, that is more powerful than the previously used transistors.

MOSFET, metal, oxide, silicone, field, effect, transistor - If I remember correctly.

I think the old transistors would do 45 watts or so on a Bird wattmeter. I think the Mosfets do a little over 50 watts...

Hmmm...Mr. RA...Mosfet and a Big Davemade....hmmmm...... 8)
