Ok, so here's the deal. I've posted some other questions regarding this issue, but I finally figured out where the noise is coming through. Its the antenna.
What I've got:
2003 Ford Expedition
Uniden PRO520XL
K40 Antenna
Here is what I have found out:
1.) When I disconnect the antenna from the radio, the noise goes away.
2.) There is a large amount of noise, even when the truck is off. I disconnect the antenna, and it almost goes dead silent. I put the antenna back on, and it yells. Much more pronounced when the truck is on, but still happens when off.
3.) Even weirder: The noise is increases when I actually screw the antenna connector back on. I stick the antenna in and I get noise, I screw it onto the radio and it gets worse.
4.) I turn on my HID Headlights, and the noise spikes to 3 out of 4 marks on the scale.
5.) Noise does not change with engine speed.
Here is what I want to know:
1.) How can I fix this?
2.) Is there an inline antenna filter that I can use for a mobile install? I've seen something called a TVI filter and a "Noise Chopper/Clipper". Do these actually work and will they work for a mobile installation?
3.) What can I do???

From my experience. (specially with Fords) "Lot's of luck!" You can try grounding more, and there are some things you can do for the fuel pump noise, but doubt you'll be able to get rid of much of the noise...I have tried all kinds of ideas with my Ford Van, with out much/ if any luck....

I could try doing that. When I key my mic, it makes my FM radio go silent. Would this be the cause?countryboy wrote:try rerouting your coax cable. it helped me!
Too bad I've got a K40 that has an attached antenna wire. Let me know how it works though. I had a brand new Uniden 520XL and it had tons of noise also through the antenna
with vehicle on or off. And mine still had noise even when the antenna was
disconnected, but quieter.
The strange thing was that when I hooked up a much older Uniden 510XL there was
no noise. So I called up Uniden and talked to tech and was told that the 520
shouldn't do that if the older 510 doesn't do it on the same setup. So I returned the
radio.
Maybe there was a big batch of bad radio's that they made???

Not sure if you guys tried it, but did you pull the whip and leave the rest of the antenna and the coax in place??
I would think if it goes quiet its not the coax and somthing from the vehicle..
K40 is a pretty sensitive antenna, I think the Capacitor in it is why...Is it real noisy around Ch10? injectors??
I have a K40 I dug out of my basement to use on another vehicle, you can change the coax, when you pull the whip
look at the tip, it was full of solder on mine, you have to get the solder out and then disassemble it where the coax
goes in, mine was one of the orgionals, i dont know how the new ones are, also I think the cap in them will blow if
you run more than 100watts avg into them.
When I pull the twist off with the whip...dead quiet...coax in place...got a Wilson 1000 same issue, injectors are very noisy.
When I turn on the ignition key without starting it I get noise as well...
