General Lee
General Lee
It seems like alot of people on here run the General Lee. Im thinking about getting a new radio soon. what is so good about the General that other radios are lacking?

I wonder myself. Since I prefer to have a radio with SSB, the General Lee's not for me.midnitebandit87 wrote:It seems like alot of people on here run the General Lee. Im thinking about getting a new radio soon. what is so good about the General that other radios are lacking?

Go with the Ranger 158edx.I have one of them and a Gen lee and i would take 1 158edx's to 20 Gen Lee radio's hand down!!! The 158edx is the best bang for the buck.Lets so only i think 40 or 50 bucks more than a Lee and it is ssb and has a 6 digit freq counter and has the new updated main board.Better radio buy far!!

hey Popcorn I am beginning to think you don't like the General Lee. Almost to the point of mention it on every post that says General Lee. Go figure , I happen to think the G Lee is a great radio because I like the way it makes some people nuts because it is what it is. Maybe if you showed your Gen Lee some love it would swing harder for ya. Just poking some fun I'll still drive my Chevy while you drive your Ford and we with both get from point A to point B.Popcorn501 wrote:Go with the Ranger 158edx.I have one of them and a Gen lee and i would take 1 158edx's to 20 Gen Lee radio's hand down!!! indeed it is. clays shows its only $30 more, without the peak and tune.Popcorn501 wrote:Go with the Ranger 158edx.I have one of them and a Gen lee and i would take 1 158edx's to 20 Gen Lee radio's hand down!!! The RCI2950 is $30 more.
If its as good of a SSB talker than the RCI-2950, then its the winner.
The 2950 is a bit of a turn-off for me, because of the lack of a real S-meter.

until the Lee flips the switch and turns the 29 into a 19 with ten cents change.MOONSHINER wrote:get a good tune on that 29, echo, and then get an amp and walk all over a lee.countryboy wrote:General Lee's wish i had one. but my cobra 29 will have to do. just a poor countryboy here

Why put a turbo on a Yugo when you can buy a General Lee and be done with it?
Or put an amp on a Lee and then your back to comparing apples to apples. Honestly, there are so many variables the radio is the least important thing in the equation. Get a good radio, tune it, and be done with it. The real payoff is in the details IMO, but hey Im a newbie so take it with a grain of salt.

And for the record The General Lee is a crappy SSB radio bottom of the list for sure. (yes I know the G Lee does not have SSB)
As for the original question there is nothing special about the General Lee other than in my experience I get mistaken as a base all the time and its track record of being a solid chassis made me feel good about putting my money down for it. The General Lee speaks well of the Connex radio line up and other Ranger radios. I would suggest finding one that fits your needs and buy it.
The key word is good radio. One that fits what you are trying to do. Some radios drive certain amps better than others. Some radios have no need for an amps as they have them built in. I posted that radios are relative. I was trying to point out the when it comes to the best of the best antennas and coax can be tested to prove which one is best in an array of applications. How ever when it comes to radios they are relative to what one wants and or likes in a radio.Honestly, there are so many variables the radio is the least important thing in the equation. Get a good radio, tune it, and be done with it.

because to tell ya the truth, the 29 is already capable of 30w pep, get a better echo board like a trb-1 echo (magnum, stryker), and you will talk right with one for that trucker sound.BigBlue 442 wrote:until the Lee flips the switch and turns the 29 into a 19 with ten cents change.MOONSHINER wrote:get a good tune on that 29, echo, and then get an amp and walk all over a lee.countryboy wrote:General Lee's wish i had one. but my cobra 29 will have to do. just a poor countryboy here![]()

how many keydown vehicles do ya see with lee's compared to 29's, 78's???
maybe the lee is loud, but throws more harmonics off channel.

this is true, except I think the 88 uses a different board than the lee and 3300, (ssb), correct me if I am wrong.Popcorn501 wrote:Well bottom line is that Gen Lee or Connex 3300 or Galaxy 88 they are the same radio with diff features. And the 158edx is just a newer updated version of the same main board that is in all the Galaxy based radios(Gen Lee,Connex,Mirage,Galaxys)End of story!!
they are all rci's I know that.

LOL I knew the whole key down 29 would be thrown in there. And as for harmonics I did have a local tell me my Lee was loud all except the off channel harmonics (notice sarcasm here). But then I don't have 9 billion watts and 60 thousand alternators in my mobile RF bomb there comes a point when we are not talking about a normal radio setup anymore. You say Ford I say Chevy I like my radio you like yours.MOONSHINER wrote:because to tell ya the truth, the 29 is already capable of 30w pep, get a better echo board like a trb-1 echo (magnum, stryker), and you will talk right with one for that trucker sound.BigBlue 442 wrote:until the Lee flips the switch and turns the 29 into a 19 with ten cents change.MOONSHINER wrote:get a good tune on that 29, echo, and then get an amp and walk all over a lee.countryboy wrote:General Lee's wish i had one. but my cobra 29 will have to do. just a poor countryboy here![]()
