Help on my first setup

#87360

Post by jollsnj »

Hi all, i have been lurking here for a few weeks and gotten some good info. My goal with my CB setup is very low key. I want a decent setup that i can talk to my friends with when we go offroading or driving around our college town. I am really not into the whole having conversations part of having a radio but more or less for sending and receiving alerts and ch9 if i need to report an accident on the roads or something. I do not have an unlimited budget so i am not looking into amps or big dollar radios. Here is a list of items i have considered purchasing for my first setup: Galaxy 929 radio, Wilson Lil Wil antenna ( I don't want some huge antenna I have to remove every time I pull in the garage), cheapo SWR meter (Galaxy's have some automatic SWR circuit but i don't know how reliable it is), Motorola external speaker (radio is planned on going in a custom enclosure), pa speaker (just for fun). I would like your opinion on this setup or any changes I should make or any advice you can give me. Thank you ~Nick

Save your money and just buy a cobra 25 if you don't actually wanna use it for talking. And that lil wil antenna isn't gonna do that galaxy any justice. For what you want cobra all the way.

If you looking to just shoot the breeze around town. and use channel 9 for accidents and such.. you should be fine. Some people may suggest going with a bigger Wilson and not the Lil Will.. but if in-town communication is what your looking for.. you should do fine. Add some decent co-ax to that setup and you shouldn't have any problems.

On a side note... be careful how and where you use the pa speaker... Buddy of mine ran one and got him self in trouble with the local law.. he thought it was cute to pull up behind people and act like a cop.. (it was funny though  )

Wilson mag mount would be a good choice for you. If need be you could remove it(parking garages etc)
If your on a limited budget (as most of us are) just find you a decent radio that suits your needs and make sure you have a good antenna system. Coax, antenna , good swr

I thought the Wilson antennas came with coax already attached, do they need to be rewired with better quality cable?

for what you want the coax that comes on them is perfect. you are running stock radio with no extra power. so the stock coax will be more than plenty for that. now if you was going to be running alot of extra power i would recommend changing coax and possibly antenna too but just stock rig you wont have to worry about that.

i would say the uniden 68, 78, cobra 25, or 29 should fit the bill.

The DX 929 is a decent little radio and will swing over 20 watts when tuned up

--I'd think that should cover what you say you are looking to do.

The 929 is a nice radio,so is the Cobra 25 for Your purpose, also the Lil Will will work well for You. Looks like to me anyway. Problem I think will be finding a good pa speaker that will fit where You may wish to hide it. That is the problem I have had in the past. Just my .02
