If you where using a Cobra 2000 what microphone would you use? Just looking for suggestions.

Thanks all.

I've always liked the Astic D-104 amplified mic on there myself...provided they are set about 50% (or less) on mic gain and mic. They are usually pleasant to listen to on both AM and SSB when they aren't over driven. Or at least to my ears.

Some haven't had much luck with the Astatic D104 mics and some otherwise claim to. You see them paired up enough together though. Maybe it depends on what type of D104 element & stand combination used. There are GD-D104's, UG8-D104's, GD-104-C's, T-UG8-D104's, T-UG9-D104's and probably a few more there somewhere . . . maybe one works better than another I'm not sure.

I haven't spent a tremendous amount of air-time on my 2000GTL but in a basic test of mic's I had around at the time, I found that a Shure Super Punch 526T desk microphone worked very well on AM/SSB and a simple Cobra "coffin" hand mic also sounded good on AM compared to several others. I had a couple reliable ears on the other end out there helping me out with audio report feedback.

The Cobra 2000GTL came with a rather stock Cobra hand mic like the one above I described using. While selecting a mic maybe here's a clue here, the instruction manual lists the supplied/suggested microphone type as "600-ohm dynamic". That would be a ball park mic range and type maybe.

I'd wonder what anyone else has to say about what they found works best or what is reputed to be really good with a Cobra 2000GTL ? One thing to remember also is that sometimes some mic's sound better on AM than on SSB, so you may getter better audio & response from a mic on one mode than on another.

Although I haven't (yet) found a good webpage for all of the older Cobra desk mic's, I'd wonder how well something like the Cobra CA-60 Dynamike Plus base/desk mic might sound on a 2000GTL? Cobra did make some desk mics in times past and might sound nice paired up with their famous base. Or maybe not, some factory manufacturer brand accessory mic's weren't that good at all. I'll have to get a Cobra base mic myself someday, if I find which ones were the best sounding to use.

Well didn't see any replies and thought to get you started and maybe bump your post a little. Maybe some of our other members would offer some advice from their own experience or what they've heard.

It has a Tug-8 mic with one of those SSB heads on it. But that is not very loud on AM for some reason and I have not been able to talk to anyone on SSB to see how it is.

Hi tx213

You can never go wrong with the original Cobra stock mic, not the new crap they are making today. If you use a power mic I recommend the D-104 set at a low gain.

Respectfully as always,

I'm not a turner guy, but a long time friend ran a 2000 with a Turner Super Sidekick. It sounded great, but then again, as I've posted before, voice has a lot to do with it. This guy sounded sooo good that he probably could announce shuttle liftoffs or fill in for a news anchor. He always sounded SLICK and O-fficial. Some folks just have that gift. I've heard others on turners that sounded processed or too compressed, not natural.

Way back in the day, we had another operator here on a Sadelta and it sounded pretty good at the time.

Give a Turner +2 a try.

I'll bet you'll like it.

Different people have different 'standards' for microphones. I think a mic should make you sound exactly as you sound in person. that's what I think of when you say fidelity. If you want a mic that makes you sound 'better' than you really do, then that's fine, but it isn't fidelity in any way. I can't judge how I sound, I have to make judgments about that by listening to other people and finding out what they happen to be using.
And since there are who knows how many different radios and mic combinations, any one particular microphone may sound different in different applications. So, it ends up being one'a them try it and see thingys. And that doesn't even touch on how my ears may hear things differently than your ears. Have fun with it.

You might also have a little pity for the rest of us who have to listen to an almost endless mic adjustment process.

A lot depends on the age of these old Mic elements, they didn't like huge temperature extremes, ect.. Your voice is very important also, if you have the "Don Pardo" deep booming , or the "Barney Fife" type of nasal tone you may need to experement with different Mics and or elements. Myself I love the powered D-104, with the adjustment set low and the radio Mic Gain set to be clear yet not picking up background noise.

D-104 Silver Eagle myself. Using a tri-switch funny setup on an older 148 GTL. I only turn the gain on the bottom of the mike about 1/32 from full left. Use the mike gain on the radio for fine tuning. For local transmission sound quality I have friend that can pick out my voice, as it sounds similar in person. Keep in mind I have a Baritone voice and the D-104 crystal may just be well suited for my voice. I have heard some women using stock mikes sound awesome too, as if they are using a power or noise cancel mike, as it turns out their higher tone voice just transmit well on stock mikes.
