Can anybody tell me a good site or something on how to peek and tune my 1000 GTL? I bought it and a power mic off of ebay for $84 dollars.
It does pretty good but it needs peeked and tuned. Does anybody know what the 1000 GTL is putting out the back?

thanks, Mitch

Hi Trapper24-7

Have you tried cbtricks.com

The Cobra 1000 GTL had a short production run. It uses the same PLL as a Cobra 29 LTD. It looks much like a Cobra 2000 GTL but is a completely different radio. It is capable of 4 to 6 watts dead key and a peak 18 to 20 watts.

You may not find much info on this radio. If anyone has it then it would be CB Tricks

Good luck,
Respectfully as always,

Rick

Hi Trapper24-7

The Cobra 2000 GTL will put out 17 to 18 watts peak. They are very inconsistent when it comes to output power. The most I have ever gotten out of a Cobar 2000 GTL was 24 watts peak on SSB. I have seen them as low as 14 watts peak. The Cobra 142 GTL is very consistent. The 142 GTL is very similar to the Cobra 2000 GTL (About 90%) but put out 18 watts peak every single time. There are ways to increase the output of both radios.

See if there is an adjustment on the DC power supply. If so, check the DC voltage going to the board, it should be 13.8 volts from the factory. Many are less than 13.8 volts. The supply can be turned up to 14.5 volts without hurting the radio. It will add to the output by 2 watts or so.

Be careful of the 110 volts ac.

Good luck,

On the Back there is 13.8 on the DC. but i have it pluged in to the wall so that is AC right? so can I turn it up on the AC?

thanks Again Rick.

Hi Trapper24-7

Most power supplies 110 ac to 13.8 volts DC can be adjusted. Some base stations, such as, the Cobra 2000 GTL has to be modified.

Look at the power supply, you may find an adjustment on the board. If so, this controls the DC output to the board. Measure the voltage at the point where the Red wire goes to the board. This will read between 13.2 and 13.8 volts. Adjust the control until you read at least 13.8 volts. The voltage can go as high as 14.5 to 14.8 volts without hurting the radio. Watch the adjustment it will go to 16 volts. Many will operate the radio at this voltage for the output power, but the radio will fail eventually.

Watch out for an AC voltage. Nothing like a good zap of 110 volts ac to wake you up or kill you. The Cobra 2000 GTL has 110 volts ac on the ON-OFF switch, most radios switch only the low DC voltage. I do not recall how it is done on the Cobra 1000 GTL.

PLEASE USE CAUTION. If you are not sure and have any questions I have the service manual for the Cobra 1000 GTL.

Good luck,

Rick

So is that what you do to peek and tune it? or is that just a thing you can do to give it more 2 wats? Is there adjustment on the board?

HI Trapper24-7

My only point about the supply voltage is on some radios it is below the factory spec. The higher the supply voltage the more output power the radio will do. I just wanted to point out that if the radio is not doing what it should you should measure the AC power supply voltage. If you are reading 13.8 DC volts then it is set correctly. In a car the supply voltage is closer to 14.5 or so. The radio will put out more power.

It will not hurt the radio to adjust the supply for 14.5 to 14.8 volts DC. That is high as I would set it. A one volt increase can give you 2 to 4 watts more power on SSB.

Good luck and use caution,

Rick

Ric is telling you about the internal power supply on the 1000. It may have an adjustment that is user friendly. The 2000 because of its power hungry digital displays at times will not output as much power, that is a 1000 at 13.8 volts dc will output more watts than a 2000 at 13.8 volts dc. because the internal power supply of the 2000 has a larger load before you transmit from it. You cannot adjust any AC power to increase power from the radio but you can use an external power supply that is adjustable whereby you can increase the voltage from 13.8 volts up to 15 volts dc. I don't subscribe to running any radio at 15 volts because the little things (bulbs, etc.) may not like the increase in voltage. I hope this added some more insight.

I'm going to bump this along. Does anyone know a good driver/final combination for the Cobra 1000 GTL ? It's supposedly a similas chassis to the 29 LTD but owning both I find different driver and final combination between the two radios.

Hi Sheriff Bart

I answered this question under a post regarding a 29 LTD. I would use a Workman 2SC-1969 for a final. The original 2SC 1969 by Toshiba does not have the same gain as the workman 2SC 1969 but can dissipate more heat. The workman is not a true 2SC 1969, but has more gain, it will not dissipate the heat as an original 2SC 1969.

If you can find the parts, use the 2SC-1957 as a driver and a 2SC 2029 for the final. The 1957 has more gain than the 2314. I have had success using a 2SC 2166 for a final even though it is used a driver in most SSB radios. The 2166 has the gain but must have a low SWR and keep cool.

Good luck,

Thanks again, I get the first paragraph, and for my 29LTD I'm going to install the workman 2sc1969X, as it already has the 1957 driver.

The second part I guess is referring to the Cobra 1000GTL ??? You mention SSB and the 1000 doesn't have SSB. It has a 2028 driver and a 2029 final. I want to upgrade my 1000GTL to the best driver / final combination. What are your recommendations ?
