Mod Johnson 4140

Post by Motorola1 »

I have a Johnson 4140 . It uses a MSC42502P PLL chip
I found on line a mod page that states to mod for low band starting at 26.165-26.605 MHz,
you need to ground pin 12. In stock condition pin 12 is permanently tied to 10.3 V.

I isolated pin 12 then I wired to the PA slide switch.(First removed pa circuit from switch.) Pin 12 to center pole,CB side back to 10 V,PA side to board ground.
When on PA side I get no background static, when key radio I get no indications on output meter or counter.
Works normal on CB side.

I noticed some mods for other radios tell you to put a resistor between IC pin and trace that was cut, should I have done this?
Another mod for High Band starting at 27.415 for ch 4 to 27.745 at ch 34,states to open pin 13 which I did ,now this mod works as stated.

Does anyone know about the first Mod ,should there be a resistor of some value installed between cut pin and trace before installing switch ?

Thanks.

Yes use a 4.7k 1/4 or 1/2 watt resistor.
