IRF-520N in Galaxy 959

Post by wyatt knight »

I have two 959's, one with the 1969 final, and one with the IRF-520's, one for a driver and one as the final. Would there be any advantage in replacing one or both of the 520's with the 520N's? I have two of those 520N's and was considering changing the final to the 520N or using both of them to convert to dual finals. If I did dual finals, could I still deadkey four watts or would my lowest deadkey go up from the modification?

Hi wyatt knight,

Performance wise the IFR-520 will not be of any any benefit. I would hold on to them in case you need to replace the MOSFETs in your later version DX-959. If you ever decide to upgrade the older Bi-polar transistor Dx-959. I would save the Toshiba 2SC-1969. They are going for about $16 a piece now that they are no longer made.

Respectfully,
Respectfully as always,

Rick

Thanks, I was wondering if there was a differance between the 520's and the 520N's. Between the two radios though, my favorite is the one with the 2sc1969 final. I have toyed with the idea of converting my 959's to dual finals, therefore the reason I got the 520N's, for the one with the mosfets already. The one with the 1969 final though, I don't want to install the mosfets. I have thought of getting a pair of the HFR-20W's from Weazle 66 off of E-Bay so that I could have a "matched" set of sorts and have the ability to go back to stock if I'm not happy with the results. I haven't proceded with the mod yet as an amp would give me a greater increase in rf power and range and would be switchable on or off as I needed it. Plus my 142 has left a bad taste in my mouth so to speak and I have been cautios since replacing the pll chip in my newer 959. Have you had a chance to test the Eleflow transistor or heard anything good or bad about that transistor? I do know there are a lot of fakes of the 1969 and others claiming to be marketing the Eleflow transistor, but the last time I checked Weazle 66 was the only listed distributor with his own unique part number, according to the Eleflow website.
