Uniden Grant AM/SSB with the MB8719 PLL

general internet picture, not the exact radio i have. but it is the identical model though.

picked up a diamond in the ruft at a yard sale the other day. only paid a dollar for the radio with an external speaker as well. but, the radio needs a little work. it receives, but it sounds garbled. it will not xmit, and the RF meter is stuck halfway. the radio us unmodified and laid in a basement for many years. i know the MB8719 PLL chip is very very hard to find, and with a few low dollar parts (new RF caps and diodes) this radio could be a monster. i have read that this is one of the best AM/SSB rigs ever made by Uniden.

to the techs on here, what is a reasonable estimated cost to do the clarifier mod and channel mod, add the +10 kc switch and change the RF caps and do the shottkey receive mod? i know it needs more work than that, probably just something simple with the symptoms it is giving now. i have read that with the age of this radio, the RF caps can dry out and cause all kinds of problems with the Xmit and receive and basically renders the radio garbage.

i opened the radio, and it appears untouched. nothing cut on the board, no hacked wires, etc. if the radio was tuned and had the mods done, with it being an SSB unit, i would guess that it could be worth around the 150 buck mark. seeing how i only have a dollar tied up in the radio, i think it is work getting it repaired and running again. i may even have an external freq counter added as a good road map.

how many channels does jumping the chip add? is it one band below and one band above 11 meter? i know it would probably have to be realigned with it being sideband. im sure someone on here can do all that. im just wondering what a ballpark dollar amount might be.

thanks for any suggestions.

If the radio sat around for a while the first thing I would try is some contact cleaner on the CB/PA switch. That may get it to work on Tx. It also may have a bad electrolytic cap that dried out. I would say an estimate without benching it is $65 to $85 to do what you want it to do and get it working again.

Jumping out the MB-8719 will give you 26.8150 MHz on the low side to 28.0450 MHz on the upper side. Without further modification you will skip. 27.4150-42-43-44-46-49. They can be added using another switch placed the back.

PM me if you just want to get it working and we can go from there. Getting it working is the cheap part of working on the radio. The mods are something else. You want to keep it looking good and make it do the "special things" without doing a lot of drilling.

Respectfully,
Respectfully as always,

Rick

Hey voodoopriest...

Most of the members on this site do their own work on their own equipment only.

For any channel mods...check cbtricks.com or just 'Google' it.

You could also check your area for a reputable CB tech that is will to work on your equipment.

Hello voodoopriest,
Welcome to the forum. Like Bombero said most of us do our own mods. If you have an unmodified Grant it is worth more unmodded than with anything that you do to it.
