Uniden PC122 audio is not clear

#351008

Post by Boll Weevil »

A coworker of mine gave me a Uniden PC122 that had been sitting in a closet for a number of years. It seems to be transmitting and receiving well, but the audio sounds as if everyone is using a cheap mic. The best way to describe it is legible, but slightly muffled. An external speaker does not appear to make any difference. Any ideas as to why this is?

Thanks.
Jim

What mic are you using? If it's the stock mic, change it out if possible. I use a uniden bearcat stock mic and it seems to work well with the PC122 I have. Here is a photo of the mic and radio[ external image ][ external image ]
Try some different mic's if you have them, in will say I get the best reports with the mic I posted. Good luck and hope you get it sorted, good radios. I talked to another station about 40 miles away last night with this radio and a sirio pl5000 mag mount. Also, if the radio has been peaked and tuned, has it been aligned and made sure it's on freq.?

Sorry I just woke up, your saying that the incoming audio sounds bad. I will make a few calls later today and see what the tech that worked mine says. I will post what I find later as it's still too early to call him.

Glad you corrected yourself before I started changing mics. :icon_e_smile:
I'm not sure of the history but I did check the modulation limiter and it has not been tampered with. I was thinking it could be an alignment issue, but I don't have the equipment or skills to check/correct it if that's the case. I would be interested in what your tech has to say.

Your XL is in nice shape. I have the straight 122 with the brownish? faceplate. I think it looks better in chrome, but I will say that it cleaned up nicely. I like the compact size and have read some very good reviews on it.

I have one setting here with the same problem. at 1st it did not do any thing and touched up some solder joints and now it is working some what. I am going to recap it in a few days and see if it cleans up. at their age the caps can start drying out and going bad. just did a trc-453 a couple months ago which is the same radio and the caps cleared it up.

I figured it could've had something to do with the age of the radio, despite the fact that it hasn't been used much in recent years. CB's have been in my family since the 60's but I'm new at diagnosing and repairing. This would be a good project to take me to the "next level". I'm looking to expand my horizons beyond broken joints and "poor man's" talkback.
