jc penney pinto 23 help
Hello my name is nick I'm new to the forum and am haveing a problem with this pinto 23 I just got. I like the looks of this thing much like a old silver faced stereo. The problem is it will power up but not receive anything. It did not have a mic with it and has been in storage for many years. I did some research and found that it will work with a galaxy mic is this correct? Where should I start to look for the problem. I did the basic check for bad solder joints and leaking caps and found none.

Hello 86kaiser,
Welcome to the forum. What is the model number on the back of the radio, it may be a different model then the one I remember. The Pinto 23 was relay switching, it has the same 4 pin plug but is wired different from the Cobra/Galaxy radios. The model number will confirm that and we will be able to tell you how to rewire the mic.

I don't see a model # but there is a catalog no. 981-0607 on a sticker on the back of the unit. On the face it has "pinto 23 channel base station".

I used a old mic from a GM 23 mobile unit that I have and rewired it for the pinto. I believe that I got it right but I still can not receive. At times it will let me tx well at least the meter moves when transmiting then it stop txing. The speaker is dead I tryed a nother one and get static.
I did notice that I get a loud thump in the speaker when powering the unit on and off, I would asume there is dc leakage somewhere in the system. If I get time tomorow I will pull some transistors and test them.
I have worked on old stereos and am learning about fixing electronics so I'm not afraid to jump into this thing I just don't know where to start when it comes to cb's.

You were right, the wiring is he same as the Cobra/ Galaxy 4 pins. After sitting for a long time the pots and coils get dirty and waxy, especially if left in a hot attic.
