Wilson 5000 to Predator 10K

Hey everyone,

I currently run a mag mount Wilson 5000 on my van which is a great antenna. I'm undergoing a little project to switch out the alternator to a HO Alt to run a Dave Made 2x4 without any problems. I'm not too big on the idea of drilling a hole in the roof of my van so I was wondering if it would behoove me to replace the Wilson which has RG8 coax I think, to a Tri Mag mount, run some Base grade Coax through the Van, and throw a Predator on top. Seems like a good idea to me, just wondering if ya'll had any better ideas or advice before I commit to buying everything. Thanks!

Hey...

Or you could just replace the coax on your Wilson 5000.

I was a little skeptical of drilling a hole too but I did it anyway. Once the initial shock wears of of "I can't believe I did this" it's not so bad. I'm glad I hard mounted mine. If you take the antenna off you can use the weather cap then it just looks like a lil satellite receiver. That's just me not everyone wants to drill their vehicle which is totally understandable. In my case a mag mount just didn't look good. One note on the hard mount. I had to catch my wife gone when I pulled out the drill! You know what they say.... It's better to ask forgiveness than ask for permission. I was evently forgiven

Unless you just want to try another antenna, I think you've probably got as good as it gets now, maybe. I also think I'd do things one step at a time, don't make a bunch of changes, it just get's more complicated in straightening things out.
If you plan on a 'large' antenna on a mag-mount then I'd definitely recommend a -large- mag-mount, you'll need it. Moving that antenna from the top to a front fender isn't unreasonable at all. Sure, there'll be some differences, but not impossible ones.
Have fun...

You'll need a Tri Mag mount for a Predator 10K, Yes...
