I have 2 questions
I picked up a old Shakespeare big stick, the top section had been sawed off a number of inches for 10 meters, according to the instructions it would work around 27.065, I was thinking of adding a firestick 5 foot model to replace the sawed off piece, any suggestions or comments

Next question..... Is the A99 out perform the Shakespeare?

by the way I hooked up my end fed wire 64 foot model, and worked NC and Missouri, changing to the Shakespeare, stations barely above the noise level.

Antron 99 IS NOT JUNK...IMO. When I was stationed in NC (Bragg) I used the Antron 99 with a President HR 2510 barefoot and spoke with multiple countries on freq 26.555. The Antron 99 did very well for its cost.

You could always add a riser, spring, disconnect, or something like that to get the amount back that was removed, unless the guy was using it for the upper end of the 10m band it's only a couple inches short. The FireStik will work, a 102" whip will do also, the top section of a Big Stick was a Shakespeare WonderStick, the fiberglass equivalent of a 102" whip.

I am inclined to say yes, given the age of the Big Stick, I would go with the Antron 99.

I am interested in this, what are you using to match the impedance?

All the fiberglass sticks are about equal. The lossy matching network makes them very broad banded and easy to install but is in efficient. The outrageous gain claims are nonsense. I guess junk is a matter of opinion. If you want something easy to install and fool proof an imax, a99 or big stick is great. If you want an efficient antenna that is less likely to bleed on your neighbors a real ground plane like a 5/8 maco or penetrator 500 is the way to go.

If you want to use it id go with a 102 whip on top. using a loaded antenna on top will just make an inefficient antenna worse....probably not bad enough to ever notice though. The weight of the 102 might put more strain on the lower sections than a fiberglass one. Maybe you could find a top section to an a99 (if it's long enough) or an imax 2000 (trim if necessary). I'm not sure about the stock demisions on the big stick. Sometimes antenna parts pop up on internet auction sites...maybe even contact solarcon
