Galaxy Dx949 adding extra channels

#368862

Post by cerberus »

Hello all, Was thinking of adding extra channels to the 949, been doing some research on this and it looks like just adding (2) switches to P5 P6 I could get some extra channels, but before doing this I would like to know if a freq realignment would have to be done after adding these 2 switches? And if so could this be done by me with just using a freq counter?

Thanks for the reply unit 451 I have read the page you posted the link to, seems pretty easy to do. Did you use a external freq counter to adjust?

Upon rereading at the link you posted unit 451 regarding freq alignment it said if desirable you can so I take it is not really a necessity to do.

If your radio was already aligned then no it won't knock it out of alignment unless you hit one of the loads or pots doing the mod.

Thanks for your reply MDYoungblood, I haven't completed the mod as of yet, so care will be taken when I attempt this.

I have done the 10kc jump shown on CB Tricks and it works great, I suggest a new blade in an exacto knife, remove about a 1/16th" of trace. The hard part is cleaning the trace to solder the resistor across and soldering the resistor, too much heat will lift the trace off the board so be careful.

Thanks guys for the replies. On that 10kc mod what exactly will that do, when you do the extra channel mod, I have read that it gives about 5 extra channels ending in A, does it do anything for the extra channels on the P5 an P6?

The 10kc jump gives you the frequencies that are skipped, look at the freq chart for the 959 and you will see what they are. Those were known as the "A" channels on the old 23 channel radios and we're still skipped when the radios went to 40 channels, those skips are seen on the dial when doing a frequency mod, 10kc up or down gets it back. It is not a necessary mod if you think it is not worth the risk.

I did the toggle switch mod and got sick of throwing switches everytime I wanted to drop down to the lowers. I bought one of those Galaxy freq. counters off of EBAY and a channel kit from a different website. The channel kit added all of the A channels and allowed me to turn the dial without having to throw a switch. It also gave me more channels than the switch mod did. The kit wasn't cheap but I thought it was worth the money.
