959 dual finals worth it?

#374001

Post by crow37 »

I just got my 959 back from a well respected tech who did a dual final conversion. He said it tested 2 watts on low and 10 watts dk rms on high. When I tested it with my dosy before it left it showed 2 on low and 4 when turned up, I got it back and it still tests the same. The heatsink was added. My question is wouldn't I see an improvement? The heatsink doesn't seem to get warm and it still has a 3amp fuse in the power wire. I thought it would draw more power than that. Anybody have any insight on this?

What is it swinging to? Can you post an inside pic? I'd think if it was really modded you would rapidly blow that fuse once it modulated enough to exceed the 3 amp draw mark.

Hello crow37,
Welcome to the forum. First thing, it would be nice for you to post a intro in the "Welcome top the Forum" topic, [Please login or register to view this link] , so the other members can say "Hi", thanks.
Now dual finals on that particular radio won't yield a lot of low wattage and your tech adjusted it for the use of an external amplifier. What the dual finals will do is give you a better PEP on the high end depending on which finals he used, paired 1969's will do around 35 to 38 watts and is a little more rugged than a paired 520 fet's (driver has to be changed to a 520 fet also) that will give a little more wattage at the risk of popping if high SWR is presence.
The heat sink shouldn't get warm unless your long winded on AM with the power turn to the max. If you use a dummy load instead of the antenna you might see different readings, long runs of coax and slight SWR mismatches fool meters.

I think that's a valid rule... Don't ask why agree with that.

Wow thanks for all the replies, its nice to know this hobby is still surviving. He claims it swings to about 42, which is ironic because he claimed it was about 50 before the dual upgrade. mosfets was a new radio 6 months ago, my pos dosy says about 15-18 on am. I don't have a dummy load at the moment. Just trying to find out if I got anything out of the upgrade.
